Komodos
I watched the lizard segment of that dvd...of course Komodos took up a section of this doc---I actually drool over these animals (funny 'cause they basically drool too ).
I cannot believe how magnificent they are. They showed a zookeeper at a zoo who had one dog tame.
As babies they look like monitors--waters or niles.
I am wondering if the rumors are true here in NY---that someone is actually breeding them in captivity illegally.....?

seriously Eddie--it's a rumor here.
A friend who breeds fairly large lizards (legally) says it's impossible.
The people who are talking said the komodos have to go for shots every 6 months to take care off the saliva problem.....other then that they are good pets (that need HUGE rooms for an enclosure). I didn't think it true until I saw that dvd---it's more possible to tame a komodo then a nile it seems.

I have never heard of them needing shots, but I too have heard rumors of someone trying to introduce them into the private sector.
I dont believe it though.
There is a paper trail a mile long on just about every one in captivity in the US. If someone flew over there, and smuggled some over, I would believe it.
But I think that would be very difficult to pull off.
And what happens IF they do get them to breed. (which isnt likely)
You cant just go advertising babies for sale on reptile classifieds.
Youd have feds knocking on your door within hours.

And to add to Frags post..
All it would take is a ticked off neighbor or ex etc.. and it would be all over with anyway..
Not likely to find a ticked off neighbor in NY though

It's true! They are raising them in the sewers and they get 90 feet long and are living off tourists and homeless people.

I totally doubt that someone is breeding them illegally. First of all it would be totally wrong to do that. These animals are rare and only found on one island in the world. If someone got caught with one they would get fined like no other...or atleast I hope they would.
And I wouldn't trust a animal like that to be tame

Speaking of Komodos, there is a GREAT article in this month's REPTILES mag that you would love on Komodo monitors Michelle. You should check it out.

Anyone in or around the Washington Zoo? The guy in the movie works there and that's where the KD is on display
Yeah well---here in NYC we keep tigers in apartments so----a KD in our yard would not be so unheard of (I hope everyone knows I'm kidding with these posts). All you really need is lotz of chinese food takeout.

have a poem i just scribbled for you all.
i kept a dragon
that was totally triffic
he slept in my room
and his snore was horrific
but he kept me safe
from night prowling growlers
from burglers
and gurglers
and creepers
and yowlers
yes, i kept a komodo right under my bed
but when i fell off my bed
he ate off my head
and now i'm as dead as a dead thing can be
and my writing this poem is purely
muscle spasms.
by me.

They don't have the toxic saliva in captivity due to a captive diet unlike the wild which is carrion. The same goes for poison arrow frogs, they are not toxic when bred in captivity.

I've seen it....i'm a NYC boy i've seen them pull a 2 year old male lion out of an apartment building in the lowereast side of the city...and just for anybody who believes those alligator myths..NOT TRUE! the star or enquirer offered a huge reward back in 95 for pics of one...about 30 of use spent almost 2 weeks in the sewers....not a sign...talked to a guys that has worked in the city sewers for 30 odd years..never seen a live baby gator much less a monster...and as far as the komodos i know someone who wanted one...he didn't get it but the rules sheet he showed me cleared stated that animal control had the right and would conduct random inspections of the komodo(s) and it's habitat...i don't even think they'd let the same person(s) own a male and female

I actually met someone who just came back from Komodo and has one on his property in FLA. Very tame as I suspected.
It took him 3 days to get to Komodo but he gave me 2 pics from his journey...I am very pleased with them

It's too bad they won't let you breed them as serious hobbiest breeding in captivity could help the komodo population out. Have a deal with the government where you give them most of the hatchlings or even eggs for big brother to incubate themselves.
