My lizards (80% of them) give me deep scratches on my arms---it frightens people because they look at it like something attacked me....when actually my captives were just playing or climbing on me

I have one, and no, they don't make good captives. Very skittish and not afraid to bite. They're not always easy to find, either, altough I've noticed a few imports available lately. Very few people have successfully bred them, partly because females are few and far between. Mine is a display animal only. He'll take food from my hand (or should I say forceps, those teeth hurt!) if it's something he *really* wants, but that's as close as I can get without a threat display, and if he realizes I don't have food, he zips into his tree faster than I can see. They need high basking temps, and very high humidity, but adequate ventilation, and all that can be tricky to balance out. I love mine, he's great to watch, but he's definitely not a pet that can be handled, and takes a fair amount of time every day to care for. I wouldn't recommend one as a pet to anyone without lots of experience, time, and money.

Water monitors get huge. They are usually fairly placid, but just plain old BIG!!!

I love tree monitors! I've wanted some black trees for a long time, but my b/f
doesn't want me to have lizards. (he thinks they are too messy since they 'go'
every day lol he just didn't like my iggy and I think it put him off lizards completely)
There was a gyu who was breeding greens in some shower stalls he converted
into cages.. I'd have to go back thru notes to find his name/website... I'll see
what I can find. I know there is a breeding facility over seas, in Sweden? That
breeds the green and black (and yellows I think?). All the black trees I've ever
seen in stores were very thin and usually died if no one shelled out the$300 or so. I had
my eye on one for over 6 months but no $ and it just got worse and worse until
he died. The stores just don't give them enough cover/make them feel secure
enough sometimes IMO. They are just awesome creatures tho, wouldnt you
guys say more of a display type lizard tho? (due to the claws and their like of being
left alone?) Good luck finding them and I'll see what I can find in my old notes.

Argentine Black and white tegus are great pets. They actually enjoy interaction and are fairly easy to keep happy. I have a pair and they really are cool. Read about them here:
