potty training
Ok, I am pretty new to monitors, I have had beardies and leopard geckos for a long time but I have only had a formerly abandoned monitor since October. Anyways my monitor acts so cat-like, do they usually? Nala is her name and she wanders the livingroom most of the night while we are home, crawls up on my lap and lays down like she enjoys being "cuddled" or something, and she has never messed outside of her cage. The first few times that she was out and she went back into her cage by herself, pooped and then came back out I thought it was just a coincidence but now I think she is definately going in there on purpose! I never trained her to do this, I wouldnt even know how to begin to train a lizard, but it seems she only wants to poop in the cage! Just wondering if anyone has any ideas why monitors do these things, it is so catlike!

Wow.
We have no experience of monitors but my partner tells me he's read they can be potty trained.
If you obtained this as a rescue then Id think there was a good chance it wasn't trained so maybe it's an instinctive thing.
How wonderful for you to have such a nice girl. I'm jealous!
Pics please.....

I'm working on getting pics on the comp...no digital camera yet... but soon! Yeah when I first got her she was really skinny and really hissy but I realized that she didnt ever try to bite just huff and puff but she doesnt do that anymore at all. I was wondering if it was instinct too, I like it, the beardies tend to poop where they are but she so far has always went back in her cage! I hope to get more monitors someday when time and space permits, she has really made me fall in love with monitors!

What kind of monitor is it?
My water monitor would never really approach me when I let him roam free. He does always crap in his water bowl no matter what so yes I'd say he is potty trained.

hey, i live with that monitor too, Nala is a savannah monitor and is about 3 feet long. We got her as a rescue with no desire on keeping her longer than getting her healthy and finding her a good home, but Sarah fell in love and so did I. She is so tame and she does go back to the cage to poop, very nice animals. After we move and get situated we want to get some tegus or another monitor, really falling in love with the species, especially Sarah.

I can't speak for monitors but I have my Sun Conure potty trained - whenever I get her out that is her cue to poop on me.
Pretty neat story though if she is potty trained - pretty cool!

that is good that your monitor is potty trained. I have a savy about 14 inches. He like to hiss at me, so how did you settle yours down? just by handling her?
