I have had them in the past.
I took care of them like I would a water monitor, or a nile.
They arent as big, so I just scaled down the enclosure a little, but still followed general varanid husbandry practices for semi-aquatic species.

My nile does that still and always has. Its all in the handling though if you restrain the lizard it may have no option but to let it rip . Thats why you have to treadmill them so they feel like they arent being overpowered.

Treadmill meaning: holding one hand in front of the other continuously while they walk on them. Makes them think they are actually going somewhere.

To answer your temperment question, most mangroves are imports.
So they will be pretty nervous, unless they were just acclimated really well. (which isnt common)
So imagine an animal that was likely snared from a tree, or underwater, shoved into a bag for a few days, sat in a non heated (or too warm) warehouse for weeks and weeks and weeks , (often with little to no food) then shipped over here and end up with a broker/wholesaler who then ships them to a pet store, or a dealer.
Most likely, it wont be too happy to see you.

Theres a guy in the CHS that keeps mangroves. I THINK he has succesfully bred them. I'm not sure. If you happen to come to ReptileFest, he should be there. He goes by Iggy.

He's in an 8x2x2. I currently have it divided in half though and keep the water monitor in half and the nile in the other. This is temporary for about the next month I accidentally broke the glass of my water monitors 125 gal...... A 6ft x 18" x 18" would be the smallest I'd go, may last ya a year or two. But for a permanent solution shoot for 8ft length, and minimum of 3ft width with 4ft being my choice. Height can be kept minimal but 4ft would provided areas for branching, however full growns rarely take to the trees, so floor space is the #1 priority.
I am designing a divided 16ft x 16ft enclusure with a built in pond that spans the width of the front wall, with viewing windows to see the koi (supplemental food source), this is my dream enclosure I have been thinking about forever. I am breaking it down into materials I'm over 2 G's already which means its never gonna be reality......but I am optomisitc. May 1st is a new apartment and definitely 2 8x4 enclusures event if I have to sandwich my bed inbetween them and sleep with my nose clothespinned cause of the stank......
Big monitors stank.....the turds are vicious, water monitor especially, the nile smells like roses compard to his stanky #$%^$%^$%^&.

i had a mangrove for awhile that was wild caught and like they said it was totally freaked out for a least two weeks before i even tried to handle her. i kept her quarantined for 3 more weeks so she settled down and also to see if any thing was going to show itself as in disease or parasitic. she ate like a champ for me for quite awhile and had her out as much as possible but then all of the sudden she stopped eating for me and all she did was lay around and didnt want bothered. so i got concerned after this went on for a week and got in contact with my local rep. vet here and told her what was going on. she saw here and told me to make sure she got the same lighting and also to make sure the cage wasnt to wet. i did all of this and about a month and a half ago i lost her. i want to get another sometime but talked to alot of monitor breeders and they told me that they are a hard species to keep in captivity. sometimes you will get lucky and get one that takes off for you and never looks back health and eating wise and then you get these ones that do great for awhile and all of the sudden just go sour for some reason. so be careful and choose very carefully and get all the info you can from everyone and especially from the dealer you are going to buy it from.i hope this helped.marty.
