Cool deal, Jeff. So, where would you get that kind of substrate? Also, what, if anything, do you do to prevent their digging from toppling things that could possibly injure them?

I just go dig up the dirt for their substrate. Silty alkaline dirt is everywhere. I wouldn't use anything else for desert monitor. No way.
Most of the cage furnishings are either bolted in, or super flat, so that any excavation has little or no effect.
Here's a female (right) digging a nest site, with the male (left) helping her with the excess dirt. Monitor rule people!!

So your saying I could keep any speicies of monitor in a pair or small group provided large enough enclosure with no worrys of territorial disputes?
What are your thoughts on a Nile housed witha Water Monitor?

I don't think its possible to mix species. I guess it'd be Ok maybe to house a couple water monitors together.....

Where ya at Jeff?
I emailed proexotics and they tore me a new one for even asking such a question LOL.....
They said all large monitor species are solitary animals and although they may co-exist for a few days, it is inevitable that no matter the size of the enclosure, one will wind up dead other than natural causes (meaning a fight to the death) since the cage creates confines from which the losing or less aggressive specimen can flee to safety.
They said dwarf species are commonly housed in groups successfully.....and I see thats what you specialize in....
So to clear my Q up....
NO HOUSING MONITORS TOGETHER UNLESS THEY ARE DWARF MONITORS OF THE SAME SPECIES !!!!

Big monitors are just as social as the smaller ones. Post that question here: and you'll get some REAL GOOD answers, trust me.
