Nile Monitor

I heard there is a size difference between Nile Monitors and Ornate Nile Monitors. I saw a picture of "Kate" on the toilet seat and my jaw dropped. Is that a regular Nile Monitor? How big comparatively do the Ornates get? It's possible that my new Nile is only a baby... he fits a little less than comfortably in a 10 gallon tank with a water dish. We recently made a much larger cage so that he has room to exercise and swim some. He has taken to burrying himself in the dirt for hours. Is that normal? I'm good with snakes but these Monitors are totally new to me. Any suggestions/info are welcome!

Kate is an adult female Ornate monitor, you have a baby Ornate. As an adult, it will need an enclosure that is 8x4x4 minimum. Females are about 5 feet, males about 6 feet. The enclosure will need a tub big enough for it to swim in, branches strong enough for it to climb (manzanita) and some dirt to dig in is also nice. Kate hides under her stock tank as her 'burrow'.

Petstores sell these babies ensuring they make great pets when in fact they do NOT! They are rather tempramental and will choose whether or not they wish to associate with you. Tolerance can not be forced upon these animals as it can with many other reptiles.

Kate can also recognize her food by site alone. If she sees me holding an egg (hard-boiled of course) she will come right at me. You can bet I toss the egg in quick before she gets too far! hehe I certainly don't wish to be lacerated. See her claws, they are about an inch long....

Beautiful Lizard dragon lady!!

she reminds me alot of my female tegu in size...but what a beauty! Her face is just adorable! She has lips like the talking plant in little shop of horrors
FEED ME, lol
I wish you lived clower so I could see her in person---you MUST post more photos as you get them..I never see eneough lizard pics here.
I love monitors. Especially waters and croc monitors...all I need is the space! That's why I have the tegus because it's as close as I can get right now.
She (Kate) is so nice, is she tame at all? My friends nephews Nile flips when you come in the room and tries to attack you through the walls of the cage...
he cannot handle him without gloves...and I have no idea what he's going to do when the animal reaches Kate's size.

Thanks for sharing!

No, she isn't tame. She used to tolerate handling, but that was when she was cold and malnourished (she was an adoption). Once she put on weight and had proper basking temps, she became a different lizard. She is rather curious and as long as you stay real still, she will come to investigate you. When she lived in the bathroom Donnie would go in, sit on the floor and read his book. She would come up, sniff up his pants leg, nudge him with her nose, then lay her head down on his leg. As long as he never moved she was fine. Once he moved she would scatter to behind the toilet...LOL

shes beautiful michelle. savannahs can be the same way, though. if you get lucky, they can be like babies. my timor monitor will not bite, but is quite shy. i love the bigger monitors, but i wanted something different. bigger isnt always better im gonna go with another snake, but, i have NO idea what i want. i was thinking, another colubrid..but...who knows..

You can best take care of it by NOT getting it....and yelling at the #$%^&#$%^&#$%^&#$%^&#$%^&#$%^&#$%^& store that is selling them. There are many much better captive monitor species available.

But if you really want one, go to www.proexotics and check their caresheets they are good. And feel free to ask me or LadyDrgn and questions that are more specific since we don't have all day to type you up a care sheet

As much as I don't usually like the "Barron's" series of pet care books, Nile Monitors by Rober J Faust and Rob Faust is actually pretty good. Here is the Amazon.com link to it.

i have a question that is slighlty of topic; how come ackie monitors are so much more expensive than niles, waters, and sahvannas? Its because i dont have nearly enough room for a big monitor and ackies only are about 2 feet. So, are they rarer or in high demand or what? i saw one selling for $600.

most ackies are captive bred--many niles and waters are not. Anything imported or wild caught will be less expensive.
Ackies are definatly in demand because here you have a monitor with a great personality that requires a smaller space. Best of all worlds if your a monitor fan

Rule of thumb for monitor pricing. The more expensive the caging requirements... the cheaper the monitor.

The Cheaper the caging requirements, the more expensive the monitor.

Niles require large and more expensive cages

ackies and stories can be kept in medium sized aquariums if need be.

that makes sense. Was the 600$ one i saw cheaper or more expensive than the normal price?
