monitor food
I have a new savannah monitor. I'm not sure how old he/she is but it's about two feet long. I have been feeding he/she crickets. Should I start with mice? I think I read somewhere not to feed it anything larger than it's head. Is that true?
Thanks for the help
Jeff

you can feed crickets, mealies, rats, mice.. some feed (as a treat becuase its fattening) dog food, or canned monitor food. remember, they are garbage disposals, and will eat anything, so be careful...and good luck with your new guy they make nice pets

they are real sweeties...if you are unsure you can always go teh slow upgrade route
there are several sizes of crickets you can feed
once it feeds well on those go up a notch to superworms or cockroaches...
if those are no problem got to pinkies , then fuzzies, then mice
pinky rats, fuzzies, small rats, med rats, lg and jumbo rats and so forth...
always remember that for the safety of your pet if the prey is alive it shoudl be stunned or fed directly with tongs to avoid a mishap.

stunning the mouse is a great technique to avoid your moniter being injured by the mouse, although monitors are agressive eaters they arent always graceful and they often strike the torso leaving the mouses powerful teeth open for retaliation. some methods arent exactly humane but who cares, i use a drumstick on my mice by holding the mouse by the tail and giving it a good love tap on the crown of the head, thick pens are also a good weapon of choice. Some people pull the tail hard enough to break its neck. its all about prefrence

imo, not really. speaking for myself, and maybe for a few others, i dont get excited when snakes strike and kill a live prey animal, i just get happy when i see them eat. i feed all frozen thawed, and my new hog eats f/t as well. *yupee* for me, im not in it for that sort of excitment. i (as well as my husband) keep snakes because thats what we like to do..i can keep 100 snakes in a house and not have it stink. i cant keep 100 dogs in one house and not have it stink..he he
there are way too many risks and dangers of feeding live..what all do you keep black tip?

We have 2 monitors and they both eat medium size rats. Or newest one is over 3 feet and the other is a little over 2 foot. My hubby wacks them against wall to knock them out. And every once in a while a little dog food.

feeding FT is always better then FK for the same reasons we do it for snakes (parasites mostly). How often do they eat whole prey? Canned food is very rich and D3 rich which is ok like once a month but anymore then that is nad for the internal organs.
