No, dont show him your not affraid a go right in. You have to make sure HES not affraid. Monitors are extremely intelligent and you have to give them there own time and space to decide whether or not they feel comfortable comming out of there enclosure and comming in contact with you.
Taming any monitor is a tedious and extremely long task. It may take a couple years for him to gain trust. The key is not to force him into anything and let him go at his own pace. A new technique someone told me recently is while feeding try to allow him to, for example, run over your leg to get to the food. It will allow him to realise he can walk on you without fear. I havn't tried it myself but it seemed to work great for him.
My way to 'tame' them is to just give them lots of time and take on slow handling sessions. Usually just petting within the enclosure. The worst thing you can do is go in, grab him (especially if hes hiding) and just start trying to handle him. It really freaks them out and he will now associate you to being a threat. Good luck with him!
