A tiny little baby one. Not skittish at all when you pick him up like my nile. This one will actually fall asleep while your holding it if you rub it on top of it's head behind the eyes.
It only eats crickets though. I offered a tiny pinkie and some mealworms and it scared the crap out of the sav. It was hissing and ran away. My nile loves pinkies, and crickets, and just about anything else you offer. Do savs eventually stop being scared of rodents and eat something other than crickets.
Any ideas on how to spice up its diet? Dusted crickets don't seem all that nutritional as the only food.
I'll post a pic of it later. Just a plain ole savannah but I like it.
Monitors are starting to be like BP's for me. Can never have enough.

As she gets a little bigger and more brave, I'm sure she'll come around and try other foods - I'd just keep trying. Or maybe leave a couple of mealies and a pink in a dish they can't get out of, and let her explore them in her own time.
Its great that she isn't skittish, I'd keep up with the regular handling and hopefully she'll be like that for her entire life.

The sav is so mellow. If it's in the hide, I can move the corkbark and just pick it up.
The nile on the other hand runs like #$%^$%^$%^$%^& when you try to get it, hisses, tail whips, and bites until you get it out. Then it chills. Weird lizard.
I tried leaving a raw egg in a bowl today. He walked thru it and made a mess. Never ate any though. Had to wash him off after that feeding attempt.
It won't touch mealworms, wax worms, earthworms, or pinkies in a bowl even if you leave them overnight. It only eats crickets. I tried tong feeding and it just scared the #$%^$%^$%^$%^& of the poor thing.

The blackthroat we had at the store a while ago was afraid of mice if you tried tong feeding him for about 2 weeks. It seemed he was more afraid of our hands than the food. Once he got used to us, he wasn't so afraid of eating the mice. After about a month he'd eat anything you'd give him. I've given both raw and hardboiled eggs to my tegu and its always a stitch. Usually he picks the yolk out of the hardboiled eggs but he'll eat the whole thing raw after he kicks it around for a while.

Most young savs do exactly what you describe. They are skittish when young. The only good thing is that it is mostly just bluffing and you can pick them up without worrying about getting bit. Niles on the other never just bluff (they can be downright nasty). I lucked out and got a really mellow one but that was only because he had been handled constantly before I even bought him. He had already grown accustomed to people. Yours might just be nervous ever since the fall. I swear monitors remember things and some even hold a grudge (my nile is still mad at me for restraining his head one time).
Just keep working with it and it should mellow out the larger it gets.
