help SAV....
i jaz bought a hatchling savannah monitor last 2 days ago.
the problem is i havent seen my sav tongue flick even once and she always gasp for air. she’s maybe around 3 inch.
is that bad?
please help me she’s my first monitor.
please guys....

Get it on dirt substrate with a basking surface of 130F and a cool burrow of 75F. The ambient temps should be between 80-90F. Provide a water bowl large enough for the lizard to soak in. If you are using a screen top cover it.

ok sir ill put the substrate again 2morrow. sir is it ok if i feed her in the same enclosure? coz they say they can eat there substrate and may cause impaction.

Any time ANY animal gasps for air is a bad thing. I can't think of any animal in which this doesn't indicate something bad.
Raze is 100% accurate in his info, and aside from what he already said I don't have much useful to offer besides that yes, gasping is bad. I don't however know what could cause it based on such little info.

A good depth is 1-2 feet but that is not feasible in a small cage. At about 8 inches soil is deep enough to effectively break down biological waste, provided it it is not large amounts. There is no magic mixture. I would like to get some clay for my soil but right now it is probably 4 parts tops soil to 1 part play sand and 1 part leaf litter/mulch/sphagnum moss/ coconut husk/vermiculite.
