Do monitors get impactions as easily as snakes? I have my savannah on outdoor carpet right now, mainly because I am worried that if I put him on dirt and feed him he will get impacted. What is the "best" substrate to keep a monitor on? most people seem to keep em on dirt. What kinda dirt works well? Just curious.

Thade

I use news paper for all my snakes n' lizards. Its cheap, always available, absorbs "accidents", and rumor has it, the ink helps kill bacteria... Also its not too likely to be swallowed.. monitors are into digging so throw enough sheets down so he can pull them around crawl under them etc...

The only downside is, its not too pretty.. but mine arent 'display animals' so nobody but me see's them..

I've got mine on slate and stones with a little bit of repti-bark for him to potty on. It helps retain heat and it also helps dull his claws. Whenever I held him, his claws dug in to my arm. Over the past month since I changed his substrate, his claws are tolerable. I've also got a nice basking spot with a piece of slate which also hold the heat for him when he needs it.
