Does anyone else end up with bad varanids?
Here was our first cage:
We had to change it because the monitor kept breaking the lights inside the cage. So we added a light box with hardware cloth to protect it. Here she is still trying to break the lights:
We felt since that little terror never broke them after the hardware cloth was put up; we would be safe with any destructive monitor. Lo and behold we hear a shatter this morning, so we check the white throat cage. Sure enough I find this:
Some how he pushed hard enough to break the energy saver bulb. So do I just end up with rotten monitors? I see dozens of cages with lamps inside and no problems yet my monitors seem to go out of their way to break their bulbs

Dang,
If It was me I would go and buy some 3/4"-1.5" angle iron, a peice of expanded metal grating some thing in the 4.27 pound and make some thing that he could not budge.
I say hardware cloth is not Stiff enough

Re: Does anyone else end up with bad varanids?
Thanks everyone. The new light has survived 4 days. If he breaks another light we will modify his cage. I am hoping it was a freak incident he won't repeat.
seriouslythough:
I am beginning to think they are varanus vampirus.

Hmmm, do they make bullet-proof light bulbs?
