Re: Savannah Monitor Food

Get rid of the sand. Savannah monitors need a high humidity environment. Where they come from in the wild has soil, not sand. That's why they need 12-24" of topsoil with a little bit of playsand mixed in for digging.

You need soil for a savannah monitor. They do not live any where in the wild, in or on sand. Why would you put them on Calcium sand? Also an over intake of Calcium or D3 can cause bone growths, abscess growths and even death. Get it off the Calcium sand.
Also cover up the screen or you will rapidly dehydrate your monitor.

Re: Savannah Monitor Food

Also be cautious with the calcium sand, I've heard of more than a handful of people who's animals have died from calcium buildup on their organs due to that stuff.

If you are concerned about your animal's calcium intake, mimic their natural diet as closely as you can, and offer SMALL amounts of calcium supplement once a week or so.

If you are adhering strictly to their natural diet, there should be no need to worry about calcium intake unless you begin to see signs of deficiency.

Why would not having the screen covered cause dehydration?

Re: Savannah Monitor Food

Because at ideal temperatures for a sav, the heat in the tank rapidly evaporates the humidity in the air that is essential for a healthy savannah monitor. If it's humidity is not as high as it needs to be, the savannah monitor dries out just as quickly as the tank does.

Re: Savannah Monitor Food

An uncovered lid allows humidity to escape - which can dry out your Sav who needs high humidity to survive.

- Edit - You beat me to it, Xeike. Darn slow work computers.

Re: Savannah Monitor Food

You must have a REALLY slow work computer. I'm at work too and I regularly throw pens at my computer because it's frustratingly slow. :P

But yes... Covering tank tops is vitally important. You cannot maintain humidity, whether high or low, when your enclosure's humidity is allowed to fluctuate with the humidity of the house, which does not remain constant.
