Re: substrate quick question
The only peat moss I have tried came from Home Depot. It did not work at all for the monitor. It was messy and would not hold a burrow.

Re: substrate quick question
i would stick to the coconut if you can afford it....or make a 50/50 mix with peat moss or something that wont mold. anything that can take high amounts of humidity

Re: substrate quick question
Raze is no master.
We use peat moss mixed with store bought (fertilizer free pesticide free) topsoil as well as play sand, leaf litter, cypress mulch, coconut husk, and any other natural substrates that make for a good burrow and mix. Just play with it for a while and you will get an idea on how it should feel.

Re: substrate quick question
Topsoil at lowes and home depot runs anywhere from 1.20 to 3.00 and it can cover a 6'x2'x2' with about 3 bags buy 4 or 5 to be safe and research how much depth it needs..

Is holding a burrow the only concern for the soil choice?

Pretty much if the substrate is good enough to hold a strong burrow it is not too dry, or too wet or too brittle or too shallow. Holding a burrow is a good indicator of "just right substrate".

Re: substrate quick question
The reason I asked is our native Adobe Clay. It can be used to make no bake brick for wall construction. When it is wet it is easily worked dug through, tunneled into etc but once it dries out it is very hard holding its form with much less porosity than most common soils.

Re: substrate quick question
Great example John. Holding a burrow and holding one burrow are two different things. Clay that will harden and make one good burrow when wet, will soon be destroyed by the monitor and a new tunnel dug, If this is not able to happen then the substrate is not very good. I know many people who mix clay with soil so it never truly dries out making it easy for multiple burrows to be dug, destroyed, re-dug etc...
Not to mention when the animal defecates you want to be able to mix the soil so anything very hard will not work.
