Despite the many objections
from the wife, I agreed to take in an adult sav this weekend.
I couldn't let it continue to get subpar care and decided that even though the wife is not too thrilled with a cage that will take up most of the snake room for one animal, I would take it in.
It's scarred up from being kept in too small a cage where it can come into contact with heat lamps, being fed live with not enough room to move to get the food, and severely obese.
The monitor is about 3 1/2 feet from nose to tail tip and at least 10 pounds (did I mention it was obese?).
I just couldn't stand to think of it wasting away in a 30 gallon tank (did I also mention the tank is way too small for it) with an owner who did not want it or it going to a petstore to be sold to someone else who has no idea what they are getting into.
So even though the wife is not too thrilled, I am taking it in and will rehab it and give it a nice LARGE enclosure.
I'll have more specifics such as what they scarring is like, how large (or small) it is, and what it actually weighs when I go to pick it up. I'll post a photo of what it looks like when it arrives and what it looks like after it gets the care a monitor like this deserves.
Man, people need to stop buying these $25 babies and thinking they can dump it into an aquarium to live and then just dump it off when they get tired of it and it outgrows it's tiny cage.

Well this took a odd twist.
Now there is a price tag on the sav. But that is not the best part. Turns out the sav is a stolen animal. I just got a phone call from some people I know telling me about a stolen sav. Scarred, a bit overweight but very friendly. Seems that this monitor was stolen to try and get some quick cash.
Needless to say, the real owner will be reunited with hs monitor tonight and the theif....well....he is screwed. What do you need to do know? Run background checks on people who want to get rid of animals?

..Wow. That's just a bit disturbing, I think.. it definetely does make you wonder if you should look into something like that a bit more.. especially with how many animals pop up in the classifieds and whatnot.

Wow....
I certainly commend you on what you were going to take on...but I am happy the owner is going to recieve his beloved pet back.
I don't know about you, but if I were you...I would setup the time to pickup the sav off the thieving scum, and have the owner (with picture proof of previous ownership,) and the po-po on hand and aware of what is taking place
=)
No harsh words, just good ol' karma comin' back around to some poor sap that has to steal a pet to make a quick buck...I wonder if he's aware that McD's happily hires all!

yes that is quite odd. i commend you on what you WERE going to do. and if you continue on doing it more power to you! but i hope that this "real owner" lets you get em anyways. good luck and please keep us posted!
