Sav Update
Thought I would let everyone know-the new guy went to the vet today. He has (as expected) parasites, but the vet gave him a dewormer, so hopefully that gets cleared up. He has 2 more doses to go. As far as the tail goes, he decided to take a wait and see approach, since its looking a little better, and told me to call him if it gets any worse.
So, all's well (or getting there) and he's well on the road to being healthy. He eats like a hog, too, so between that and getting rid of the worms he should start packing some weight back on.
I feel so much better now, lol. Thanks to everyone who helped me out when i was freaking out over him. You guys are the best.

Tapeworms, and Panacur wormer. I've got the other two doses with me, but I'm a bit up in the air about whether I want to try giving it myself. Kinda worried about doing something wrong. I've never had to worm a reptile before.

Good luck with him, I am glad the vet had answers for you.

Is it oral medication? You may need someone to help you when you give it to the monitor. I have squirted medication it in a mouse and fed the mouse to the monitor. I don't know if it what you need to do though.
I am sure it will be happy and healthy soon. You really seem to care about it.

Re: Sav Update
when i had a bout of mouth rot with my tegu, i was instructed to swab out his mouth with a betadyne solution. it was impossible to get him to keep his mouth open. the only thing that worked was to put a small amount of scent on the end of a syringe. be it egg or whatever. he would bite the syringe, thus opening his mouth for easy access

Re: Sav Update
Panacur as far as I know won't get rid of tapeworms... I could be wrong...
but it should be something along the lines of Droncit instead.. it gets rid of tapeworms and roundworms with only like, 2 doses with the second dose being in 2 weeks.

I looked up an article (you got me worried, lol) and it said that Panacur will kill the taenia species, but not the common tapeworm. Common tapeworms come from fleas, while taenia come from eating carrion or hunting prey. So I'm assuming that he's got the taenia sort...haven't seen a monitor with fleas yet, lol.

That's a really good idea. Thank you! Seems like it would work better than him trying to clamp down on the syringe and having a tug o war with me.

Okay, yeah I knew I was missing something but it wasn't ringing a bell.... Taenia is probably what it is then, so no worries... that's why I said, "I could be wrong" .... lol

Re: Sav Update
I also fill mice with water to help hydrate sick monitors. If you inject the mouse by going through the thigh muscle then into the stomach you will have less leaking.

I'll probably do that tonight when I give him his fuzzy...I haven't seen him drink yet. I've been misting him whenever he shows his face from under his log tunnel, but he just kind of gives me the stink eye then scoots back under. So I'm not sure how much in the way of fluids he's getting.

Re: Sav Update
I have noticed my sav hates drinking from bowls how ever if it is sunk into a shelf and on a slant he loves it.

Re: Sav Update
That's nifty...I guess it seems more natural to them than a raised bowl. I'll have to see if I can work something like that into the cage we're building.
