Aunt Jemima has invaded.
All the monitor lovers should know what that means. Whew my house stinks and it is too cold to open any windows.
Here is a picture of the culprit taken 5/14/07 :

and one from 2/11/08 :

It means some one wants to mate, I had to crack the windows open a bit, boy does he stink.

Re: Aunt Jemima has invaded.
Aunt Jemima invading always means lots and lots of really rich food, where I come from. o.O
Maybe the reference is lost on me, I didn't know Aunt Jemima had anything to do with mating. lol

Why don't they tell you these things when you see them in a store or at a reptile show?

MPGT, they don't tell you this at shows or stores because most sales people don't know about this. Few keep monitors to sexual maturity and even fewer survive the first year. Heck, I thought it was only the females that did it. I found with Albigularis the males and females both do it, with water monitors it tends to be just the females. The water monitors don't smell like the Blackthroats though. They have an oder during season, but not as strong or as maple syrupy .

Does this happen with Savs? Oy vay, mine is getting close to a year old.....I wish the "plug in" companys made something with natural ingredients so I could use them in the reptile room.

Re: Aunt Jemima has invaded.
Can everyone else see the pictures or am I taking crazy pills?
Thank god this smell only last for a few months. Some people think they would not mind coming home to a sweet maple syrup smell, but when he marks he usually defecates, so you get a combination of feces x with pancakes
nicolenadia: I have never noticed this with my sav.

Re: Aunt Jemima has invaded.
He is huge.
I can't wait until I can get a B&W Argentinian Tegu... I want a male. I am SO in love with their big fat cheeks. ^___^
That's one reason monitors and tegus appeal to me so much - they get fat. I love an animal I can get fat.

Re: Aunt Jemima has invaded.
Are you going to find a mate for him? I know that is a touchy subject with adults. I have never smelled the maple syrup smell, but I have smelled some bad stuff from monitors. HAHA
He looks good and plump in the pictures.

Re: Aunt Jemima has invaded.
No, no mate for him. I am not proud of the pet trade and the chore of finding good keepers makes me want to breed my animals even less. Hopefully when I move, Rachel and I will start an alligator snapping turtle project, so I can release the reptiles I breed.
If I knew someone I trusted with a female I may lend him out, but I want nothing to do with selling the babies or more likely, housing the babies.

Re: Aunt Jemima has invaded.
Ever wonder what a rotting carcass smells like? Come to my house and smell what my monitor is cookin up. Luckily, it goes right into the water croc....but trying not to gag as I carry it to the toilet, is hard to achieve.
B&W Tegus are fantastic. Here is the Tegu hug video I keep telling everyone I would post. Tegu group hug....I want a pen like this.
