Soil substrates/poulty feed???
Hi Everyone,
I went to Home Depot yesterday to check out soils. Once I am done with my SAV enclosure, I would like to give him a sandy soil mix so he can burrow. I was looking for an organic soil and found one, and I believe it is made by Miracle Grow. I first of all, think Miracle grow puts all kinds of wacky stuff in their soils, expecially to be able to make the grow claims that they do....so I already don't trust them. I flipped over the bag and read the ingredients and it lists, "Poultry Feed". Anyone know what that is? Doesn't sound like something I want in the soil.
Any ideas on the best soil? I was thinking of hiking around Great Falls and just digging up a few buckets full of soil, but its park land, and I think thats stealing....LOL.

I have used the cheapest topsoil that Home Depot carries. It was $1.77 or so. It didn't have anything added that could hurt the monitors like the Miracle Grow stuff does. I mixed in playsand from the cement isle because it has smaller grains than the leveling sand in the garden center. This mixture has worked very well for me. You may find better soil on the hike, but I hate to see you get in trouble with the law. HAHA

Cheapest stuff is the best. DO NOT USE it with fertilizer. The playsand and soil works great. Also can use peat moss + playsand.

Re: Soil substrates/poulty feed???
I'm glad someone posted a thread about this!!
I'm getting an Ackie monitor in a few days. If I go the soil/playsand route, what percentage of each should be in the mix (eg: 50%sand/50%soil)?

Re: Soil substrates/poulty feed???
id say more like 70% soil.. I pretty much just go by feel tho.. When you feel it kind of sticking together enough to hold a burrow you have a good mixture

Thats my own personal way of doing it.. Far from an exact science haha.

Re: Soil substrates/poulty feed???
I do not know if it is available where you live, but I use a topsoil that is mixed with strands of coconut fiber for my outdoor enclosures. It holds a burrow and the coconut fiber retains an incredible amount of moisture. Costs me ca. $1.00 a bag.

Re: Soil substrates/poulty feed???
And I apologize. I'm a terrible typer....I meant "Poultry Feed"...which is a listed ingredent on the back of an organic soil mix.

Re: Soil substrates/poulty feed???
Ours is a mixture of anything we wanted to throw in. It is far from an exact measurement but it has play sand, top soil, peat moss, coconut bricks, leaf litter and cypress mulch.
Do not buy anything by miracle grow. I am pretty sure poultry feed is exactly what it says it is. Feed for chickens.
