I have talked to a few people who have had this happen in captivity. One had a pair of cummingi waters, that he had to completely block out the viewing windows and let them get used to his silhouette before uncovering the windows. This took about a year I believe. Others that can be spastic are nile monitors, tree monitors, mangrove monitors, croc monitors and many other imports. With W/C monitors it is always a gamble on how they will behave.

Re: Nile
Odds are it is, Few people have bred niles in captivity. I believe Rob Faust and Jody Pieper are the only 2 in America. 99% of niles available to the public are W/C.

Re: Nile
I know one person locally that bred niles once. They were in California at the time. She posts occasionally on other forums as Nessie's Mom. Raz is right that the odds are strong that any nile is WC.

While having a monitor regurgitate upon a door being opened is definitely an extreme case, I'm amazed you've never heard of defensive regurgitation in captive monitors before. It's very common. The forums are full of posts of people who have just bought their first monitor and want to know why it keeps regurgitating every time they pick it up. It doesn't have to be wild caught monitors, either. The hatchling monitors my pair produces will regurgitate if you handle them on a feeding day (or defecate if you handle them a day later ). As a consequence, I wait until they are accustomed to the presence of people before I do anything with them.

Re: Nile
I think part of our problem was our monitor caging took a while to dial in. The safety of the pond and white noise of the waterfall stopped the regurgitation completely.
Thanks for posting Crocdoc I thought this would be greatly reduced with a CBB specimen.
Chad kiss the little sucker on the nose and in an instant you will have stitches in your lip and probably a picture of him hanging from your face.

Re: Nile
Nope. Never known anyone that had it happen before. Granted I don’t run in monitor circles. But I have had many species come through like Savs, BTs, Waters, Niles, and Mangroves and never had it happen myself. And when I helped out at the shop we had about everything come in. If anything would have regurged, I would have thought a pair of WC Black Trees would (freaking razor blade Velcro lizards) or maybe the skittish little ackies. Not to mention that all of the specimens at the shop were on display. Of course, I also never handle any animal after feeding either. It is just incredible to me that it is that common and I never ran across it. Of course, I am pretty non-threatening

Re: Nile
In my years of keeping reptiles I have only seen one snake that rivaled my last water monitor in skidishness. This was a monocle cobra at a shelter that would hiss and strike her cage anytime a person was in viewing distance. The snake could not be on display because of frequently busting open his face attacking the glass. It was kept in a cage with only a few air holes to look out, but every time someone walked in the room it hissed and struck, even if they were no where around the cage. It too, had a hard time keeping food down.
If your monitors put up with people seeing them they were nothing like my water monitor. Now my Blackthroat and savannah are the complete opposite, and are fearless of people.
