ATTN: Razeraze
I dont know if you like crocodile monitors as much as the other monitors, but I found this video and thought you would really like it. I love all the angles and how it does such a good job of showing this amazing creature

Re: ATTN: Razeraze
Great video thanks for sharing. The guy who posted that video helped me a ton with my own husbandry, he is an awesome keeper as well as a great herpetologist. Owen if you start taking a real interest in monitors let me know. There is a site that is packed with monitor pictures that you could not imagine, but it is not a chat site like this. How ever if you want to just lurk you will some amazing photos and videos, like when the poster of this video hatched out perentis.

No they are a protected species and Australia does not export. He is an Australian herpetologist and I am pretty sure no amount of money would ever convince him to sell one of those animals, least of all to someone he does not know in person. Maybe if we all beg he will post some pictures here, but that is as good as it is going to get.

Re: ATTN: Razeraze
awesome video. Got to a hold a 5-6' croc monitor a while back and it was amazing. I will never keep one I'm sure but they are an awesome species that I will continue to love(in someone elses facility).

I think I know what site you are talking about . I love crocdile monitors but they are really what a fusion between are croc and lizard would be. Those claws are vicious and those teeth can give one of the worst bites period. I got to learn a lot more about monitors but it seems like the universal truth is that crocs and niles are for people that have some serious monitor training under their belt.
I will try an Ackie or a Black Throat when the time comes, and that time is not now!

Re: ATTN: Razeraze
Not that hard to find, its the price.
They have been more and more commonly seen for sale lately but I don't believe you can cross state lines with them unless you have the proper permits,
Last ones I saw were around 6-8k for near breeding single animals.

Blackthroats can be a handful too, basically the bigger the lizard the more dangerous. A Balcktrhoat does not have the serrated teeth like a komodo, water or croc, but what they lack in teeth structure they make up in bone crushing bite strength.

Odds are they were smuggled in but the best person to answer that is the guy who posted the video, he has bred more lace monitors than any other monitor keeper I know of, and is constantly posting pics of them hatching.

Re: ATTN: Razeraze
I think spike06 is the perfect candidate to own either a lace monitor or perentie, so it's a shame he can't get them. The beardie and rainbow boa experience would have him all ready to go. As for space, just partition the beardie tank to make room for the lacie or perentie, or get a sweater box from somewhere and you're set!

(personally, I think it's tops that these animals aren't widely available over there, but hey, that's just me)

Re: ATTN: Razeraze
I wish there was more of a restriction on the other "big boys" of the monitor species, perhaps I would not have to keep adopting them.

Re: ATTN: Razeraze
Spike again legal issues will stop you if you are responsible enough to obey the law.
I love all large monitors, my favorite is Varanus Salvator. How ever I could not find one to adopt or a CBB one, so I adopted a Sav and a BT. I think trying to get impossible dream animals is ridiculous, when so many monitors need homes.
Spike if you decide to eventually get a monitor after tons of research, I suggest you adopt or buy a CBB, not try and attain an illegal species.

Re: ATTN: Razeraze
adopting would be pretty sweet. it's like finally the poor things get a break.
my favorite monitors remain tree monitors. black and emerald. (Varanus beccarii and Varanus prasinus) theyre really cool, and stay relativly small, in comparison to others. pricey and rare and often wild caught, i probably wont ever get one **sniffle**
