Some General Questions-New
I’ve always wanted a Monitor lizard for quite some time. I started with the Alligator lizards when I was a kid, then moved to Bearded Dragons. That was some time ago, and I’d like to get another lizard in the future. I’m still just starting my research and am not planning on getting a monitor anytime in the near future. Lots of reading and research to do. Still I have some general questions for this community. First of all, I live in Southern California and I’ve read it’s possible to keep monitors in outside enclosures here. . Then moving them inside for winter seasons. How possible is this? I like the idea of building a good size enclosure in my backyard.
Another concern I have is that we have a Desert Tortoise in our backyard. If the monitor were to get out and assuming it would be a larger size Argus for example, would this tortoise be at risk?
Speaking of the Argus, it is definitely peaked my interest. . I love the idea of how active the lizard is, and how they seem to be very intelligent. I’m not one of these people that have to handle their lizards all the time. I’m fine if it never tames, I just want to be able to clean its living area without it getting to aggressive at me.
Still it’s about at the limit of my size that I feel I could have safely. What other species of Monitor are in the Medium size category? I was looking at tree monitors but they look harder to manage. The savannahs just don’t do anything for me, and I’d like something bigger than an Ackie. I’d prefer not to get an aquatic species. It would be easier for me to have an enclosure outside with plenty of dirt for them to burrow.
Thanks for all the advice, this is an awesome community look forward to reading and learning a lot more.
