Bad monitor setup
Hi,Im not a expert on monitors but a few days ago i was at the local petstore buying a rat for my boa.I seen this nile monitor in this cage with little water and pine shavings for bedding.I thought they need some kind of bark for bedding to increase humitidy and to make it better it had no heat source like a heat lamp or heat strip which made me angry.I wanted to buy it but im afraid i wont be able to take care of it with the needs it requires. Just dont know what to do hate to see the thing suffer. grrrrrrrrrrr Should i buy it or not

Re: Bad monitor setup
you shouldnt buy it, if you have to wonder weather you will be able to house it or not, then you probably wont be able to keep it.

I agree. but on the other hand, listen to your heart and do what you think is the best.

Re: Bad monitor setup
Also, as a 'by-the-way,' Nile monitors are one of the most difficult and un-suitable captive monitors around. In most cases they generally do not make good pets at all. They really are only for expert keepers with huge accomodations and the patience to deal with an often VERY ornery large lizard.

Re: Bad monitor setup
I have seen monitors in situations like that before. Some I have bought and resold after getting the monitor healthy. The thing is that if you a healthy monitor to keep, don't buy it. If the shop can't sell it then they won't get anymore in. One may suffer to save many more of them.
I got an ornate from a petshop once. I thought I was doing a good dead to get it. The next time I went to that shop they had many more monitors in horrible health. That taught me to only buy monitors I thought were healthy. I still do the occasional rescue from local people, but i will probably stop doing that too. Buying captive bred is the best way to go.
