Varanus rudicollis
Just thought that I would share a picture of my Varanus rudicollis. It is hard to get a really nice picture, because he is constantly growing and as a result, always shedding.

Cheers,
Michael

They should not be grouped together with tegus. Although tegus and monitors may look similar, they are quite distantly related. To group the two together would be like grouping garter snakes together with rosy boas (yes, they are that distantly related, actually more so).
Does not occur in the Philippines . Forgot Malaysia, Indonesia and Myanmar. No specimen has every attained 5ft, largest on record is an exceptional specimen (much larger than average) of 146cm (ca. 4ft 9.5in)(Lim, 1958 ). Maximum size is considered 130cm (ca. 4ft 3in)(Nuthphand n.d.).

Who says arboreal? It retreats into the trees when threatened and for the evening, but the overwhelming majority of prey taken are terrestrial= they spend most of the time on the ground foraging. Again, not in the Philippines, forgot Indonesia, Malaysia and Myanmar. Among the most common habitats this species is found are peat swamps, much more so than evergreen tropical rainforests. Enclosure size is woefully small for such an active foraging species.

Regular handling is more likely to cause them to see you as a threat than become tame. Mine is extremely docile in that it allows me to do anything around him without him feeling threatened, but does not like to be touched. I can coax him to come onto my arm on his own.
They should have vertical hollow trunks that they can use as hides, which is what they use in nature for staying overnight as well as hiding away from threats. (look under the basking platform in the picture)

72°F is terribly cold for this species. Over the majority of its range, particularly those areas exploited for the pet trade, never get as cold as 72°F.

No moderate humidity- they need high humidity levels. Their skin quickly shows signs of being too dry when humidity levels are not adequate.

Sorry for countering almost everything on the post, but there was some horrible information in the post. Can you please tell me where this horrible information came from so I might be able to do something about them changing it before people kill off their present or future Varanus rudicollis?

Michael if you didn't, I would have. Thanks for all that explanation and your rudicollis looks awesome. Like DRZRider, asked I too am curious as to how you acquired this monitor and how long you have had it? Will it be a re-release like many of your salvators? Did you get my message on the retic question? I could use your help.

Re: Varanus rudicollis
Tom, I remember writing a reply, but see it was not in the 'sent box'. I must have previewed it and never sent it. I will send you another reply tomorrow.
.
On the information given, I have seen someone else post the same information somewhere else, so it must be posted somewhere, maybe in a care sheet. The problem is that there is not much published information about this animal because it is so cryptic; less than a dozen pictures of it in the wild exist world wide.

You have to love the care sheet cult age. I think this is how bad information gets passed so quickly. I can not tell you of many snake keepers who have any field studies on snakes they keep, or any knowledge about surface temps, natural diet, or any thinking outside their own collection observations. This is why I bother you so much and pick up books like Mark Auliya's.
