Savannah Monitor Poo
I am trying to collect a stool sample to take to the vet when I take my Savannah monitor into the vet and I am pretty sure that I hit paydirt. He let out this ball of white stuff. it looks like a big kidney stone. is that poo? He is a rescue and i have not owned a monitor before so i am pretty clueless about some of this stuff.

the white stuff is urates (pee)
reptiles condense their nitrogenous waste into uric acid which is a solid white chalky substance
this is an adaptation to help them conserve water
edit: forgot to mention, no its not poo
i'm not sure if a vet can check for parasites via urates
hopefully someone else will know the answer

I thought it might be a urate but was not sure if monitors did that. I am mostly a snake keeper and I know that snakes do that but was not sure for monitors. How often do monitors poo? he has yet to poo and we have had him for about a week with no such movement  I really need a stool sample...........maybe some exlax............im just kidding about the exlax thing.

yeah all reptiles excrete nitrogen via uric acid
i'm not sure how often monitors poop
post all of your husbandry info... temps, humidity, feeding, cage size, etc
hopefully razeraze, mr cota, or some of the other monitor folks can help you out more

The picture is not very clear. How large is the monitor? That could be a regurgitation, did you see it happen or did you find it in the cage.

I saw it happen. Its not a regurgitation...wrong end.. I am pretty sure that it is a urate. I was just not sure if monitors did that as well. This monitor is a rescue and he is very underweight and we are trying to fatten him up a bit and we also want to take him into the vet but need a stool sample to check for parasites and worms. We were told that a worm was found in his stool by the previous owner. I guess I was just hopeful that this would be a stool sample I could use.

Again the picture is not very clear. Depending on diet it could be very lightly colored feces. Yes monitors do expel urates as well as sperm plugs (that is definitely not a plug). Good luck at the vet and let us know what happens.

yea we have probably the worst digital camera in the world. is there any sure fire way to tell if it is feces or a urate? and if it is feces what would make it so incredibly light colored like that?

Perhaps if you feed a ton of white meat like quail or turkey, it would result in lighter colored feces.

Well I have yet to feed him any white meat yet so I think that would pretty much insure that this is a urate and not feces. Thank you for all of your help.
