Rescue Nile
I got a text message from BW the other day asking me if i wanted a 2 foot nile?
Oh, could say no huh? right?
He (the monitor NOT BW) was found under someone mobile home in south Ga. a few weeks ago. And it has been cold here in Ga as of late. The guy calls BW to come and get it and proceeds to tell him that the thing bit him on the finger. Well duh! LONG story short, i meet up with BW the other night pick him (the monitor NOT BW) up and he bites me while BW and i are trimming his nails. DUH, again! All in all he was in good shape, a little thin, covered in Ga red clay, but spunky!
The funny thing was that when BW asked if i wanted him i was in the middle of constructing a reptile room in my basement that would include a 8 x 4 gator enclosure. SO, now with a few adjustments, i have turned it into a 11 x 4 Nile enclosure, that this little guy will surely grow into in the next 12 months.
Hes not all that big, maybe 18 inches from snout to tail tip. I have set up a TEMPORARY enclosure for him. Got him in it and with in an hour he was fast asleep. He didnt wake up until until about 2pm the next day. So i suspect that he has not slept good for the pased few days. When he woke up he ate a f/t rat pink and took a swim, Here are some pics of him doing so.
My wife has aptly named him nataS!

Re: Rescue Nile
Beautiful lizard, a bit skinny so good luck with him.
Why would you make the gator cage smaller than a monitors cage? Niles average 5-7 feet, gators average 7-10 feet.
You don't have to keep trimming claws as long as you are not planning on carrying it too much. I stopped claw trimming because my monitors were getting to big to hold so I just put them on the floor and let then cruise around. A good amount of drift wood will keep the claws blunt enough they don't get caught on carpet. If you insist on claw trimming, do it while the nile is in a large water tub. Niles and Asian water monitors seem to use water as a refuge and are much more calm in the water.
Good luck with the little angel, please post pics of the enclosure.

Re: Rescue Nile
the gator enclosure was going to be smaller because IF dnr would allow me to have one for educational purposes, i cant keep one longer that 40 inches.

Re: Rescue Nile
So what would happen once they got bigger than 40 inches? Or were you planning on getting a Cuvier's dwarf caiman?

Re: Rescue Nile
hes doing great! 3 days with me, had his second meal of rat pinks lastnight, 2 this time. Though he let them sit for nearly 3 hours before taking them. He also seems a little more curious about me than skittish!

They get rotated out by DNR and go to stationary displays. Most people in GA with Gators are for educational purposes and we can only have them as long as they serve that purpose. They are not "pets". Essentially, DNR sends over gators that were confiscated for us to take care of for a couple years.

Re: Rescue Nile
nice. Niles are so cute when they are little. Im glad you have a nice set up for him too, all to often you see them in a tiny little cage. Give him lots of dirt lol, I heard they can move a few hundred pounds of dirt from one side of the cage to the other in a days time haha
