I just got my baby savannah, I am not sure how old he is but he is about 5 inches. I have him in a 20 long, but should I put him in something smaller for his own security until he is bigger? I don't want to overwhelm him thats all. I have him on the aquarium carpet ( the green stuff) for now but will be changing over to a dirt substrate in a few days! His name is Maximus

congrats!
He should be fine in the twenty gallon long..just give him plenty of stuff to climb on and hide in/under..
being able to dig around in the dirt should make him a bit more comfortable as well..
Try to avoid handling unless it's absolutley needed..monitors are very intelligent reptiles, and a bad start could really change how the percieve your prescense...
just wait untill he's totally acclimated, and has no fear of you..could take days, weeks, or longer...good luck!

Don't worry about the tank, He'll grow into it really fast. My Savannah grew 18 inches in his first year. He is 23 inches now and I have him in a 55 gal. tank.

hey! congrats on the new guy.
i don't know much about monitors but i've read a few places that to get him/her accustomed to you, you'll need to handle him/her daily inorder to get it tamed down.
and then increase the handling to twice daily to keep it tame.
