MONITORS! what to get? could use some info
hey everyone, I've always been a snake person, but man monitors have me drooling... I'm sure everyone will say a sav monitor is the way to go for a first, but what other kinds can be suitable for begginers? I love waters.. tegus are pretty cool too... now a 6-7ft enclosure is what the adult will end up in, so i don't want one that won't be comfortable in that.. thanks!

I would have to go with the Tegu. They tame down better then other Monitors in my opinion. I use tame lightly none are really tame.

None of the animals are tame PERIOD.
I have a savannah and i continued to hear that they were excellent beginner monitors.
After having one for even a short time, I don't recommend them for a beginner, unless you are prepared to be VERY patient, very tolerant, and spend a lot of time working with them.
They gape, bite, hiss, need certain setups, large cages, lots of room, lots of dirt, "keep em hot and feed em a lot" is the saying. A Sav in it's first year can not be overfed, according to most monitor keepers.
Not to completely discourage you, because I really enjoy my monitor, I just don't think they are for everyone, so make sure you do your research, and if you have any questions, ask
NicoleRussell has a little Tegu she just got, and can tell you the difference of temperment between them and give you great info on them!

start small
honestly the best beginner monitors are ackies. and a trio could live very comfortably in a 6x3 enclosure. very easy to handle and they acclimate to human interaction well.
a bit pricey. but consider this: you may get a savannah for 15 bucks at a reptile show. but caging costs are high. whereas you may pay $150 for an individual yellow ackie, but the cagong costs are way less as they don't get as big.

dumerelii are great monitors also. try roughnecks.com but you will need an 6x3x4 or even an 8x4x4. ben aller breeds them. beautiful little dragons an captive bred. our sav is an angel. he comes when called.
Putfile - tank43
waters are great but get big and will need a huge enclosure. our water monitors water bowl is 6x3
just remember they are all a gamble and any can be mean. plus they are a ton harder to care for than snakes.

Look at the care sheets on here and you decide any further questions you should ask in your own thread. I only have one tip is i dont reccomend Nile's as they have very aggressive attitudes (I owned one for about 6 months)
