Well i went to that swapmeet at Crosswinds Farm, Illinois this morning and sacrificed my money for a baby nile monitor. I must say that i was worried picking him up when i got him home but he was fine. Well he hissed like 4 times (hahaha.. how cute) but only coz he jumped from my hands and as i was trying to catch him (took like 20 mins under the couch) for the last grabs before i placed him in his tank. He makes me laugh while i watch him explore and dig through the dirt.
I used top soil as substrate. Is this ok?

Congrats! Savannas are lovely lizards. I like the way monitors move and stuff, swimming, digging, etc. Keep us updated on him!

MOst people I know that keep them use Cypress as substrate. The top soil can get pretty messy. They are cute as babies. Too bad you bought one At my last CHS meeting last week they had a baby Nile Monitor up for adoption. I hope you wont mind too much when he desides to introduce you to his tail. He will make sure you 2 get very well aquainted.

I'm getting wells in my eyes. I can't wait.
Too bad for me about the adoption. I seems i am missing out on everything these last few weeks. I usually get a bee in my bonnet and then i WANT IT WANT IT WANT IT. I'll grow up one day though... nah..

He seems to be turning around now and wont eat infront of me and wont let me pick him up the way i used to.
He always tries to whip me with his tail but it's just a laugh when he tries. I got bit by him twice now. The second encounter was when i was handling him a couple weeks ago and he jumped from my hands and ran under the computer desk in the most awkward position. I picked him clear... eventually.. and as i was trying to pull myself to my feet, he started hissing like crazy. I didn't think too much of it then in slow motion, he grips onto the top of my index finger and started chewing. I must say it didn't tickle.
Was impressed at the amount of blood he drew. Little bugger! The missus was looking at the whole thing and now she is like... Put the lid on... when i do water bowl maintanance. She still thinks he is cute though.
Just thought i'd give ya an update.

Of coarse! Every write-up on the nile breed has had bad things to say about the temperament. Doesn't bother me at all frankly.
I didn't expect the little guy to bite so hard... Still... i wont trade or sell him for any other.
There has only been one case that i read about which involved a nile monitor to be very placid with its owner. Even then it was quite twitchy.
I wont take in an animal unless i know at least the general dissposition/behaviour/diet before i say yes to housing it. The Nile monitor was no exception! If anything, it was the most difficult decision out of all my critters and i aint sorry for purchasing him.

Here is the little bugger.
A little difficult to see due to him moving too much but none the less clear enough.

There is a 7 foot claim but the majority male consistently gets to 6 foot, female 5 foot (snout to tail tip).
