Butaan on TV
Sunday May 21, 7pm ET on Animal Planet check out the Wild Kingdom special Butaan: The Lost Dragon in which Daniel Bennett discusses his work with Varanus olivaceous.
Unfortunately I am in England so I wont get to see it, therefore all you lucky punks who have a chance to see this show have a duty to watch it and then type it up here word for word so I don't miss out, lol.
Afterwards check out Daniels website at Mampam conservation to read more about the butaan, and check out some of the amazing conservation work he is doing.
Regards, AJS

Where is everyone today? Surely someone out there is interested in these remarkable lizards. Even if the chances of owning one are remote (and rightly so in my opinion) it shouldn't stop us from enjoying this species from afar.

Forgot to ask if anyone actually saw this after it had been on. So, did anyone see it? What did you think? Who's going to be the first to PM me a transcript of the show?
I have asked about olivaceous on a lot of forums lately, and the negative backlash (not to mention threatening emails) was quite shocking. I was accused of all sorts, from only being interested in monitors because they are rare, to actively threatening the survival of the species simply by asking about their captive requirements.
I have no commercial interest in this species, and seeing as everyone here seems to be a bit more open minded, and olivaceous still interests me (despite the villagers breaking out their pitchforks) if you want to theorise about their ecology or care requiremenrts, feel free to add to the thread.
Regards,
AS

Yeah, I know what you mean, but these days most animals seem to be under threat of vanishing forever. I know there are a number of people who have criticised Daniel Bennett's research and sampling methods and they insist that the butaan is more widespread. In a way it would be good if he was wrong, and V. olivaceous turned out to be more common than we think, but he has spent so much time in the Philippines researching olivaceous that I doubt it.
Did you see the one for sale at Prehistoric Pets, the ad said just feed it grapes and mice, how messed up is that?

AJS
