Thinking of getting my first monitor....

I am thinking of getting a savannah monitor. I have Colombian red tails, cornsnakes, sand boas, and a Brazilian rainbow boa. I would love any information that anyone is willing to give me on savannahs. Basically I was wondering the the feeding, the housing, the growth rate and stuff like that. I have a freezer full of rodents so when it gets to rodents that should not be a problem and I know where I can buy crickets, but how often should it eat. I know that there is a history of obesity in them. I am also wondering what size enclosure is right for a baby. I have looked at tons of care sheets and can not get a common tank size. Is it worth building it a 5 foot cage now that I can later use for snakes if it gets to big for that or is that to big for a baby even if given a sufficient amount of hides? I would really appreciate any information.
Thank you

The large tank should be fine with lots of hides and fake tree stuff. They should eat a few crickets everyday, and mice/turkey diet once a week or so. As a treat you can give them eggs or wet cat food. I hear rumor they will eat salad, but mine never did. They need UVB and a basking spot of over 100F, they ambient air should be in the high 80 low 90 during the day and low 80 at night. Growth rate is fast and steady, as babies they are shedding at a month or less and double in size the first year. They will max out in size at about 4 feet with the tail in about 5 years, and then they just get FAT. You will need to get his nails trimmed on a REGULAR basis if you want to handle him. I put a flat cinderblock like a ramp in my monitor's cage for natural wear down on their toes. As far as leash training, put it on him and let him wander from as young as you can so they get used to it. You can give him cat treats for positive reinforcement VERY infrequently if you wish, as I have read it is not that great for them. They tend to be squirrely as babies and will try to bite and jump. I wear leather baseball batting gloves while holding babies, because if they bite I do not get all cut up, they are surprisingly strong biters even with the gloves. To grab them go for right at the front shoulders fast and firm. Good luck, they are fun.
