Thinking about getting black tree monitors
ive been reading up on them, and theyre pretty cool, and beautiful. me and my boyfriend are doing up a wall of cages, and in the middle we will have 2 3x3x8 cages, and were talking about what too put in them, one of them will be a breeding group of redtailed green ratsnakes, and the second will probably be blue or black tree monitors, we wanted something active, pretty, and that wont outgrow a cage like that. anyone have any info on these guys or work with them? thanks

I would suggest more space for them. I have a single green tree monitor (which I beleive is a smaller species) in a 4' wide X2.5' deep X6' tall cage, and I wish I could give him more space- he uses every bit of the cage, and is *very* active! They are very cool animals, but are high maintenance and need a lot of room to move.

Black trees are neat little critters. Strictly a display animal of course. If you pick them up, they flip around and use your forearm as a branch. Those claws are wicked sharp. I was looking into them earlier this year, but did not have the cage space to dedicate to them.

thanks for the links terry, ill check them out when i get home. i did read it suggested about 50 cubic feet as a minimum for a pair, and the cage dementions im planning would be 48 cubic feet, and i might extend them to be even bigger, 3.5 feet wide instead of 3 ft wide depending on weather or not we leave 6 inches on either side of the wall for ventalation, or just build them right up against the wall.

oh, and about gecko species, im going to be keep a pair of rhacodactylus leachianus, which is the largest arborial gecko, in a 2x4. they dont do well in groups, and definitely dont need that much space. and most of my animals are "display" animals, i respect that reptiles dont feel a need to be handled, and set them up and care for them acordingly. if i want to pick up and play with something cute, thats what i have dogs for
