thinkin about a savy
I was at one of my trusted reptile dealers last night and everytime i go i hold their savannah monitor. He's real nice and everything, 60 bucks for him. I'm building my iggy a resort in my basemeant so i will have an 85 gal tank sitting around. How long could the monitor stay in an 85?

I have a 421 d boaphile I've never used. I fight the urge all day long and every day not to fill it w/ a hypo (my next boa) I use this cage as a stand and to store the extra cypress bedding, spray bottles and stuff.

i would say you might have a 120 gallon, not an 85.or your measurements are off.
seriously, if you are considering monitors you could house a pair or possible trio of dwarf monitors (ackies, freckleds, pilbaras, etc). all adult size. if you purchased hatchlings, you would be best tp keep them in a 20 long before introducing them to the final 4 x 2 x 2. but just do a search for dwarf monitors or odatria. you will not be dissappointed with ackies. they hardly bite (with exception of some reds) and can be very entertaining in behavior and antics. some call them the bearded dragon of varanids.
generally think of the size of monitor you want. MINIMUM SIZE CAGE is twice the length of the animal for length of enclosure. width would be the equal to length of the animal. again, (and i say this alot) that is minimum enclosure size.
height should be enough to allow for 1 - 2ft of soil and elevated basking areas.

Nailed it. A 4' by 2' would be ok for a sav till it hits around 2'. Remeber a sav will need a cage that is about 6' by 3' and thats a minimum. I think that that is too small but what do I know about it.

Even if T only reaches 2 1/2' he will get an 8' by 4'. I may do something bigger than that but I will use that for a more active monitor like an argus or something

my final argus enclosure plans on being 10ft and at least 4ft wide. probably 5 ft tall for 2ft soil and 3ft of climbing/tripoding room.

then i guess its a 120! ive been looking at yellow ackies.. now that i've seen them mentioned. One question, why does everyone buy them in 3's? and should they be all females or one male and 2 females or what?

I'll post pics of my stock tank I got today. Under 70 bucks for a 4' by 2' by 2' cage. Now once I get the dirt I will post some pics

there is a theory that sex is determined within the 1st month by socialization of the hatchlings. you will get 1 male and 2 females with a trio. it is thought that majority will be female while one dominant hatchling will be male.
again this is theory and is not 100% garunteed. so people get these trios with hopes of having a breedable group.
i have spoken with breeders who do not buy into this theory as they have raised groups with the outcome of 100% same sex. so i don't completely follow that theory, but it may be species specific also. maybe only ackies have this happen as opposed to other dwarf monitor species such as pilbara and kimberly rocks, black heads and freckleds.
there is still much to learn and as time goes by more info is coming out on monitor husbandry. just when you think you've got it, the monitors prove you wrong or new info comes out. the best thing i've come to know is that your monitors will tell you what needs changing and what they prefer. they're the only real experts IMO.
