New Baby Savvy

We brought home our new baby a week ago Friday - so now we are working on getting him out and used to being handled.

He's pretty nervous and retiring and will scuttle back out the way still when we approach the cage (big fat ugly predator humans ). But still we persist in getting him out and handle him for at least 10-15 mins at a time probably 3-4 times a day. He wriggles a lot for a couple of minutes then gives up and "puts up with" us stroking the top of his head and sides of his head (think he enjoys that he shuts his eyes sometimes).

He's never tried to bite us when we get him out, has pooped on us only a few times (but not at all today). So fingers crossed he won't suddenly turn into a biting monitor and we've kinda bypassed that somehow. But geez don't they move fast!! I had to make a quick grab when he escaped and legged it up the sofa

My g/f and I saw one at the local reptile store the other day that we just about brought home. If they didn't eat so much, we probably would have~!

don't let that detour you from a monitor. They are great. Yesterday I saw something that made all the money for food worth it. T was on his hind legs and his tail balancing trying to reach the roach on the tongs. He would jump up and land back the same way. I will try and get some pics of it. It was sooooo cute

Yes - i will try and get some pics I went back to the reptile store yesterday to buy my weekly intake of rodents and insects - and as always couldn't resist going through to the reptile room. And there out was the most beautiful monitor I've ever seen - it was a new intake, about 6 months the guy said and not for sale yet - it had lovely lightish peachy coloring on it as well as being lighter than the normal monitor. But not only that - it was acting more like a bearded dragon - talk about laid-back and docile. Apparently it hadn't been handled that much but was just so calm. It isn't ill or anything as it was alert and active (it had been scratching on the glass to come out). I kinda wish we'd held of on buying our monitor for a couple more weeks ... this one would be a doddle to tame.

And you must take your pics as well Pork - I love the way they stand up on their hind legs!
