I keep savannah monitors only because the niles get so big. Just make sure you really do your research before deciding on a nile, they get really big, and if they are not tame they can tear you up. They also needs lots of space and eat alot. If this is your first lizard or even your first monitor I don't recommend a nile.

definetly not for a beginner in varanids. i suggest ackies as a first monitor.
niles are skittish and take alot of time and patience to become accustom to captivity and handling.
basic care is the same as most monitors. soil as substrate and deep enough to burrow, temps are generally the same and so is diet. only exception is that they need a large water container for soaking as the are semi-aquatic. but less than a water monitor.
niles can average 6-7ft. so an enclosure 12-14 ft in length and 6ft wide is minimum. height should be 4-5ft for the 2ft of dirt and space for climbing and mounting basking lights.
the best book on niles is by Robert (Faust or Frost). it is an orange book with a nile on the cover.
