Mole hills substrate?

Out the back in the fields where we live - there is a field which the farmer keeps completely free of doing anything to (i.e. adding fertilizer and stuff) - people walk their dogs along the edges of this field - moles dig all over the place so there are lots of nice little piles of soil just sat there conveniently ready for bagging - do you think this stuff would be OK for a monitor to dig in? It's frozen cold here in the UK but would I need to bake the earth to make sure it's free of anything?

Thanks guys

I would still bake it. It sounds ok as long an there are no ferilizers or pestisides. You may not know they are there but they could be. It sounds like it would be ok.

sift it for debris and i wouldn't worry too much about baking. monitors aren't native to the UK, so there are no natural parasites that could effect them.
baking would kill alot of the bacteria in the soil that helps break down feces you may miss when spot cleaning. some add earthworms to their soil to help clean it and give the monitor a little snack while digging.
no nightcrawlers! a guy at a bait shop tried to sell them to me, but as hot as it gets in the enclosure the crawlers would die quick. earthworms are best.
the freezing would kill alot of stuff, so i wouldn't worry too much about baking or trying to sterilize it. just sift it real good to get out rocks or any debris such as broken glass from bottles, wood and trash, etc.
