Bosc feeding diet
Hi all,
Just trying to get a good established diet going for my bosc and wanted as much info as poss.
Everyone has different ideas about amounts and whats good/bad for em, so as I said I'm trying to get as much info as possible.
I dont know his exact age? but he's about 8" not counting his tail, I'll attach a pic though not very good. you can use my hand as a reference for his size I guess!
I'm wanting to feed him a good varied diet, which will allow him to grow at the correct rate etc! Amounts would be usefull to!
I'll also attach a full body shot though it may make him appear bigger as I zoomed in alot.
Thanks for looking, Buck

This is my opinion and there are some that agree and disagree..but its what I do so take it for what you want.
At that size he is able to eat a lot of crickets, silks, hornworms, butters, wax, and mealworms. If he was mine I would feed him mostly crickets and mealworms with occasional silks, butters, etc. As he get larger, or really even now, you can incorporate smaller pieces of chicken giblit, small pieces of smelts, pieces of a seafood mix, and pinky mice/rats. I said small pieces of all of them just because you don't want to risk him joking or anything.
As for the whole argument is that I personally think rodents should be used VERY rarely as they do not eat them in the wild, as far as daniel bennet found so I personally try and feed my guy more seafood mix, smelts, and as much insects as I can just because it is not practical to fill up a large monitor on smaller insects. I dont want to argue again lol, so just take it for what it is.
Good luck with the little dude.

Yeah, I know ppl's opinions vary alot esp with these critters.
At the moment his main consist of crix, locust, wax's and the odd rodent. he's also had some small amounts of chicken and an egg (he didnt like the egg) I'm aware also they like snails and earth worms too but dont know how often or how many etc.
Its not a problem or anything he eats well its just most info from 1 site to another conflicts so I'm just gathering as much as poss!
Thanks though!

Yea its good you want to find as much info as possible. You should pick up the book by Ravi and Daniel Bennet. Great read.
As far as worm and snails, those are great too but snails usually are give to bigger adults that can crush the shell. You want to make sure they dont have pecticides in there system if you're collecting them from an area that may use them.
If you can get your hand on roaches, those are awesome meals. As well, if you're using locusts, Daniel did find they ate a lot of locusts in the wild so im sure those would be awesome to give him.

yeah, the good thing about him trashing his viv is that it means I gotta go in alot to straighten things out. At 1st he's hide when I approached, but now he just sits and watches! I can pet him and he just flattens out a bit, he'll take a locust from my hand so I feel like we are getting somewhere!

That's the truth. I gave up on trying to get the cage the way "I" wanted it. Mine changes it around to the way he wants it. I move something where I want it, he immediately moves it right back to where he wants it.
The cage needs to be a certain way for him and no matter what I do, he rearranges it back to the way he likes it.
I gave up and let him have it look the way he is comfortable with.
