Alrighty, hello all. i have a few questions on savs. So far i have heard tons of things about them, trouble is, i keep hearing contradictions in EVERYTHING from substrate to humidity to feeding and everything else. so for starters- what kind of substrate is best for them? Right now, after trying forest bedding,(got it in his mouth) sand,(too dry, had shedding problems) and newspaper (too dry and all he did was sit underneath it) i now have him on a mix of sand and forest bedding (forest bedding, btw, is the stuff that comes in a compressed brick- coconut shavings) and am going to see how he does on that. Do they really like to burrow? also, how much too feed? i have heard to feed him as much as he'll eat, the problem is, he is only a baby and quite a piggy! i feed him adult crickets and he will eat up to 5 so far, and still wants more, but i am scared he will eat too much! he is only about 9 inches long. should i really let him eat as much as he wants? also, what humidity % does his cage need to be? sand was way too dry, but is 50-60% too high? also, about uvb- does he really need it? he has a uv light but is it neccessary? and how fast should he be growing? all in all i am very confused since everyone tells me different things. any help would be appreciated!

First its not possible to over feed a baby Sav they will eat until they are full My one baby is doing about 25-30 crickets in a feeding. As for Subtrate I keep mine on a mix of cypress mulch and Bed-a-Beast. it doesnt hold burrows real well but I give them a hide and fill it with this stuff and the can adjust and dig out the hide as needed. Savs are grassland monitors but that doesnt mean the like it dry they spend a good bit of there time in holes that are humidy I keep them around 50-60% humidity. There is no proof either way that a monitor gets any benifit from a UVB bulb I take mine out one a week and let the bask in the real sun I figure thats all the need. One more thing to remeber is Savs like ti hot on there basking spot 125-130*.
