Lethargiic, your confusing as you say you can't train monitors, and than go on to say that their brains are quite equipped like a dogs brain...... you can train dogs though...
I'm not sure about monitors intelligence, but I know that Tegus are extremely intelligent lizards..... as far as lizards go.

You can "train" them by conditioning them to respond to certian stimuli. And food will be involved in this I assure you. You make the noise of calling their name and then food is supplied. Then you had better have some kind of food item every time you do it. After a time they will begin to respond, but be aware that they may confuse the noise of you calling their name with other noises your mouth makes and could respond to that too. You could probably get them to respond better to a dog training clicker and not have too much to worry about. This is the most base form of training and takes many, many hours to see any real results, but if you are dilligent and have the time go for it. Let us know how it goes. My brother had one that would sit up like a dog and wait for food every time the door was opened to it's room. That became a problem if no food was supplied though.

Monitors are extremely intelligent, much closer to birds in that respect than any other reptile. The problem though, is that what is important to a monitor is probably very different than whats important to you. Anything that will result in them getting food is obviously important to them, and even in the wild they're pretty ingenious when it comes to things like that (removing bait from traps, 'begging' at parks, etc). All this aside though, if you think you train one like a dog you're in for a rude awakening.... hopefully at the end of a tail and not the sharp end. =)

Salt Water crocs are the smartest reptile, but with that aside, monitors can be trained to recongize certain words with food and such. If you say a certain word EVERYTIME you feed him/her, they will eventually learn that word means food and respond to it, but thats it, they won't come seeking you for attention or anything. Monitors in general aren't real fond of ppl. I consider your lucky if you have a monitor that allows you to touch it without a defensive display.
