Hey just kidding---but seriously I hope you didn't buy a nile with plans on getting him used to handling. Most of them hate human contact and to try and force the issue as it grows might just lay the groundwork for some nasty bites and scratches.

There are 2 distinct types of Nile Monitor personalitys. They are both fairly equally common.
1- Every opportunity to eat your face off and tail thrash you into wishing you had bought a gerbil will be taken.
2- seemingly dog tame but realistically that's only because he-she's nearly dead from stress or some other form of illness.
If you ever manage to "tame" your nile monitor especially in it's adult years, PLEASE make a vet appointment asap.

you arent feeding him enough for one. a pinky three times a week prolly isnt enough. one thing id like to point out now is that monitors really arent the huge carnivore that everyone makes them out to be. Most of them, babies especially, are mostly insectivores and do much better when fed as such. In young monitors meats act as steroids almost. their grow goes faster and they tend to be very nervous and agressive. feed crickets and other insects (eg. superwoms and silkworms) as long as hes interested in them. (or you can afford it) chances are your have to start ordering but trust me its worth it. you can throw mice and rats in as supplements as they are growing for calcium and vitamins. trust me youll be much happier with your animal and youll have a much happier animal.

1)get more insects into the diet for a juevenile.you may wanna look into breeding hissing roaches.bigger bugs for bigger lizards.and feed it EVERYDAY!!
do not use unfertilized eggs excpet on rare occassion as a treat until it gets over 1ft.you can still feed rodents, but make sure it has a bug diet as well.
2)get the basking surface temp up to 130F and in the mid 90s for ambient temps.this will help it digest properly.if food sits in it's gut for over 24 hrs it begins to rot and regurgitation is stinky.
3)all monitors are individuals.i had a female that i could leash and hold.however my argus may never be handleable as it expects food everytime i open the cage.if their's nothing in my hand to eat,it tries to eat my hand.
there is no "tame" monitor.it only becomes tolerant of you picking it up.it's not gonna come when you call it.it's only gonna "snuggle" when it is cold and you are warm.
4)get ready to build a big cage.within a year at the right temps and right diet, your monitor will need one.go ahead and make it about 12ftL x 6ftW x 6ftH.fill the bottom 1 1/2 -2 ft with topsoil.use holes in the side for good ventilation, but not too many or too big or else all your heat and humidity will escape.stay away from screen tops as they are notorious for this.
5)being able to handle your monitor requires some patience adn a pain tolerance.the claws will get ya everytime.so trimming or gloves are options.first it will get used to you feeding it.it will see you as a food source and come to expect it everytime you near the cage.second come s the patience and pain tolerance.but keep trying.the worse thing in life is to fail by not trying.
um,i just noticed all these posts are old.i hate being anewbie on a site.but screw it.it's here for you or anyone else.i'm not deleting it after all that typing.
