salvator monitor

i havnt been here in a while because ive been spending most my time on a smaller fourm, but i need some moniter help. so i figured id come here because there are sooo many people who keep a varient of things.so to the point ive been thinking about geting a salvator monitor i kno they get big and need some big caging. i have a 8 long 6 high 4 wide 2 story cage in my basement i havnt used since one of my iguana rescues died. i was wondering if that was sufficent caging and if any one has one, where to get one at, and their temprament. thanks

Glad you know where to get good information.

Water monitors do need laqrge caging and a large pool to soak in. they really don't need a high cage. 8x4 Still sounds like it would be small for a 7-8' HEAVY monitor, that requires a large pool. Adults can get to be 70-100 pounds i hear. I just really don't see them as being good captives.

You can keep anything alive in any cage, but will the animal really be happy?

Monitors of that size require a minimum of a room sized enclosure. Lots of floor space with a large pool of water, Like Ed_R stated.

If you want to use that cage, I would recommend a species of monitor that doesn't get as large.
Ackies are nice, and so are Tegus (not a monitor, but nice all the same).

Good Luck

That's a great cage for the time in between juvie and monster
You would need something larger in the end--and the space is not the scarey part, neither is the really big pool or the GREAT filtration system---to me, the food bill is.
Anyone who tells you they feed a healthy monitor of that size crap from the supermarket and not *mostly* whole prey, they do not or will not have a healthy animal themselves after a while.
They need big whole prey---and unless you plan on breeding and prekilling (feeding live will make them more agressive---along with all the parasitic reasons we do not do this) you will need stock in
RodentPro
But hey I know what you see when you look at them...I LOVE waters. All big lizards are really nice animals. If you can afford it and have the room---and realize the commitment----go for it.
Just don't be a putz and not post pictures if you do

I have 2 savvies and they can be really great pets! Our biggest is an escape artist. So if you get a tank that is long but not very high i would recommend a lid that locks. Ours are still small so most of the time its no prob but if we leave the room with the lid off they are gone And they eat alot. Our small one went into renal failure a few months ago and the vet put him on some medical dog/cat food and told us to give him electrolites. Our big one has an attitude at times and really doesn't like to be messed with too much, her previous owner mistreated him. But he is much better now with us. I would recommend savannah's but make sure you have the proper lighting/heat for them. And i would also recommend not getting a hatchling. Even thou their bite is not hard it is hard to keep them alive. I had one and it died within a few weeks apparently the whole litter of monitors from that pet store had died Good luck
