Homers new stomping grounds.
I finally got an evening free where I could take some pics of Homer enjoying his new surroundings. Homer is the perfect room monitor, he checks to make sure everyone is in there cage,

he patrols the room,

and can I say quite a snuggle bunny
Thanks again Broncoman

Homer looks great, he already has grown. I miss him , but I'm glad he has a good home. He needs the room and the time, things I could not give him right now. Maybe, in a few years, I can talk my wife into a Homer-2. Thanks for the pictures, unBOAlievable. And for everybodys help here at Redtailboa.net.

Unboalievable===what are some of the differences you are noticing about monitors verses tegus?

Well Nicole, I have worked with a lot of different monitors such as Savanahs, black throats, argus, water, nile, roughnecks, mangrove which lived out there lives with me. Each one had a different personality even among the same species. As far as husbandry, the argentine tegus are the easiest to maintane "lizard" I have ever worked with, simply because they are tolerant of pretty much every type of condition be it cold, hot, humid or dry. Monitors require much more detailed husbandry depending on species but well worth the effort. One big difference that you would notice would be the fact that your arm would always have puncture holes and slices on it and when they get really big they will ruin a new pair of jeans

Is the intelligence similar to tegus?
I have a pair and te female is an animal I always have to watch for possible mood swings (I guess much like human females) and the male is steady---a marshmallow----big sweet boy.
They are both very smart -they each have different ways of showing this to me though
I have always loved all the monitors--very hard to choose a starting point. I love big lizards but the thought of buying whole prey for a full grown water monitor----sheesh---I mean my tegus eat everyday....and it's no joke the bill I get from rodent pro.

Again it depends on species, If you are wanting a monitor with inteligence that doesn't get to big get an argus, you won't be dissapointed. They are very smart much like tegus and very comical

actually I was offered a pair of argus monitors---I was VERY interested in them a little while back. I was talked out of it because someone on KS said they need a huge cage because of their activity level and they are nasty....I really love the way they look in photos, but have never actually seen one -- not even in a zoo.
Do they enjoy interaction with humans?

I believe any monitor really needs a large cage, they do have high energy levels but that is part of what makes them exiting, they climb and dig and explore every inch of their enclosure.
Do they like interaction with humans, well they are not the cuddle up type nor do they like to be restrained but I did not find them nasty, I even believe they liked my presence in the room and came out to greet me everyday. We worked out a scedule that worked well with me and the monitors and we coexisted happily for many years. If you are wanting a lap dog this isn't it, but if you are wanting a monitor that you can learn new things from everyday it would be an argus. Not to mention they look very kewl when they stand on their hind legs and look around
