New Spotted Python
Hello all, I am fairly new here and have enjoyed reading many of the posts. I now have my first snake, a 9 month old spotted python. He's about 9" long, and just lovely. I'm not positive that it is a he, but thats what I've been calling it
I will see if I can attach a pic of him...

I was wondering if he was a freckle He is my first snake, so I am trying to learn more than the basics
He is absolutely amazing! I don't understand how so many people are affraid of them
Earlier tonight he was climbing all over my glasses, and curling up near my eyes. He's too cute, lol.
Geez, never thought I would ever be one to cuddle a snake and think it was just the sweetest thing!

Gorgeous snake!
One thing that might help you with it in the future..... and this is entirely up to you.... change the substrate in the cage from aspen shavings to cypress mulch. The cypress will help hold the humidity a lot better and help you snake with trouble free sheds. I think that cypress also looks more natural.

I use cypress for all my snakes for the following reasons:
1. its cheap
2. it looks natrual
3. it holds humidity
4. its safe for almost all species of snakes
5. its good for snakes that love to burrow
6. you dont have to change it weekly like you do with newspaper. Just spot clean every once and a while and change it out monthly.
Nice snake btw, i bet you will have more to come as this hobby is so adictive :P

I will see if I can get some Cypress mulch in at the local herp shop. What does it look like (compared to coconut bark & aspen)?
Several months ago I was in the local herp shop (I was preparing to do my bookkeeping practicum there), talking with the owner, when she asked if I would like to hold one of the snakes. I had never held a captive bred snake before (only wild caught garters from where I used to live), so was a bit nervous. Of course, this little guy was the coolest thing, so friendly and deffinately not aggressive in the least.
My hubby was the most difficult to convince. He was terrified of snakes! So, I brought him in to the shop, where he held 3 different snakes in one day. He was very happy with himself (holding an adult corn, a rtb, & this little guy).
So, months and months later we decided that we would choose our first snake. I was having a hard time picking between an adult charcoal corn (amazing guy, just love him), a baby charcoal corn, and this little spotted. So, in the end it was this one. His personality and size was perfect for where we live now.
We both adore him, and even my pet-hating BIL thought he was just the coolest thing!
Now speaking of addictions, I have a feeling we will end up with a few more snakes in the near future, as hubby and I are buying the local herp shop We should be taking it over in a few months We are both extremely happy with it, and can't wait to get in there! That's why I first came to this board, on recomendation of someone online. I have been reading as much as possible about the various types of herps (that I know will be there and may again come to us).
I do plan on keeping a few more snakes, though we haven't sat down to decide on what kinds. I love the RTBs, but I hesitate at the potential size. Balls are nice too. So many snakes, so little time, lol.
