Burms open mouth and some yellow gunk on glass
a friend of mine has a few adult burmese pythons who've been opening their mouths and leaving them open everytime i see them. there's also this weird disgusting yellow gunk on the glass of their tanks and on the newspaper he uses on the bottom of the cages. i don't know anything about burmese pythons (all i have now is a ball python), this doesn't seem right. what can i do or he do and what's wrong?

I hate to bear the bad news...but it sounds like BD (Burm's Disease) BD is a little understood and believed by some (mostly breeders still trying to sell what they have) as a myth...but it's real. I've dealt with it and so have many others and this is why you don't see many if any green burms over 5 or 6 years old. It rarely shows up untill after the 30th month of a burms life. Now...no respectable Vet or scientist would ever name a disease "Burm's Disease" This name was obviously coined by hobbiests...The closest match to a real disease name is ophidian paramyxovirus or OPMV for short. It is just like aids in humans. It is a virus that methodically destroys the immuno system and the snakes develop chronic RI and pneumonia problems that eventually kill them. There is no cure and it will wipe out the entire collection as it highly contageous. What you have described is a very classic example...I hope I'm wrong but sadly, probably not. Quarantine is a must...snakes lack a diaphragm so they cant cough well enough to effectively clear their lungs. That yellow goo will eventually choke them to death. It's a horrible way to die...if symptoms don't clear up or keep coming back despite treatment...the kindest thing to do would be to put them down and burn the cages...and continue quarantine of any other animals in the collection for a few YEARS...Do not breed anything and do not sell anything. Ophidian paramyxovirus is not limited to just burms by any stretch. Anything in his collection could possibly pick it up. Incubation varies greatly among species. ...anyway...I wish your friend the best of luck.
