Carpet python swallowed jaw
Do you remember the pics posted of the boa that had swallowed its jaw over on Ssnakess? Well, it IS possible!
I know this because Bobbi-bobbi did it. I don't have any pics of it since I was in a major panic to get it fixed. When I left him alone last night he was swallowing his rat like a happy snake should be. Tonight I get ready to go to bed and I looked in on him. I see his rat lying there in his cage. I go to chastise him for spitting him out when I hear him hissing at me. When I take a closer look I see there is something is not right.....
Donnie pulls him out, grabs him by the head and I see that he has swallowed his jaw! ACK!! I can't pull it out, nor am I strong enough to hold him. The 24 hour emergency vet only had 4 footed fuzzy vets on hand, so that was no good. We called Gib and he came over to assist Donnie.
His jaw is out, he pierced his glottis just a bit. Gib flushed his mouth with diluted peroxide and then with water.
SO... it IS possible, I have seen it with my own eyes.... talk about scary. It's going to take a while to wind down from this one. *whew*

Wow, that's freaky. I have also seen a picture of either a burm or a retic that had swallowed its jaw as well. I know it's not a common occurence, but I will have to watch for that.

Yes, he's fine now. resting on his perch. We covered his cage to help lessen the stress caused to him. Apparantly the glottis wasn't pierced at all, just pinched almost completely shut. The poor thing had to completely puff out his throat to breathe. Donnie and Gib both took turns trying to pull the jaw out... they were both bleeding by the time it was done.
I dunno Eddie.... although it was only the right half of his jaw, had I not seen it, I don't think I would have thought it possible. It truly was bizarre and I was VERY worried I have no idea how it happened. *shakes head in disbelief*

I bet you're glad people don't have jaws like a snake. I'm glad your carpet's okay. REALLY glad his glottis isn't pierced. That would suck....

Sounds like that was scary!
If the glottis was peirced could you have gone ahead and put a nice little barbell on it for him and start a snake fashion trend?

Yeah Michelle, just the lower jaw or 1/2 of it being swallowed, very possible and can happen.
I think Rav threw out a link in chat on a snake that had a PJC (partial jaw consumption) (I just patented THAT term.. )
As for how hard it is to get out, well, ask Donnie and Gib. Then cosider the impossibility of a whole head being swallowed without literally ripping all the connective tissues and the obvious unlikelihood that the snake in question, would have survived, period, much less with little to no apparent effects such as ripped tissues or just split open completly between the upper and lower jaws.
