My Royal finally had a decent shed

I agree with eddie on this one my Royals sheds have all had a lttle bit of blood usally around the vents and what not. If you are not seeing any traces of mites or damaged scales that he should be fine. But I would keep a close eye on him anyway.

one large piece with two smaller pieces in all ( at least he got it all himself) my question though is when I opened his rubbermaid there was a small smear of what looked to be blood on the newspaper, then when I examined the shed there was traces of it too. I looked him over and cannot see anything to point to injury. any thoughts?

Check his vent, eyes and nostrils for mites. Sometimes when a snake that has mites sheds, there are traces of blood found on both the shed and the snake.

Also, you might check the snake where you found the blood and look for a damaged scale.

Let me ask this- snake mites dont just appear right? I mean they need some kind of host to bring them into the house, right? the blood seemed to be around the vent on the skin, I looked him over thoroughly without a trace of mites or injury, could it have been some stubborn skin around the cloaca that bled a little?

Yes, it could have been that as well since some shed is from the tender areas just inside the vent.
