why? for one, it's dangerous for the snake... for two, a snake that size should not be eating mice, it should be eating rats.....

Pet shop was out of rats so I had to get 5 mice. And it maybe dangerous but its how they survive in the wild and I have over 25 frozen rats in my freezer that he won't eat.

Re: Feeding Time
they can also get away in the wild when the prey fights back... they can't get away in a cage
maybe try giving him an extra week and then feed him? I've never had a boa refuse to switch... if they are on a 7-10 day schedule, make them wait 2 weeks... it's usually as simple as that... patience is key, you won't starve a boa if you don't feed it for a few weeks

Re: Feeding Time
What website does everyone use for frozen mice? I get tired of having to p/k myself, and would rather buy in bulk...

Re: Feeding Time
yea... shipping sucks, but you still will pay a LOT less then live prices... I pay about $200-250 to feed 40 snakes for about 4 months... If I bought live prey for them, I'd spend that much weekly, LOL!

How do you think people/suppliers kill these mice lol out in the wild where they can escape? Do you think its better for us as in humans to kill the mice or for the snake to?
Your only valid point was the safety of my snake. And i watch him eat the mice. And my snake is an aggressive eater. He quickly devours them and so far so good.

Re: Feeding Time
it only takes one time...
I think it's better for us humans to kill them... Because most companies use gas... quick and painless... Try getting constricted by a large python and tell me which one is better
and if prey gets free, which I HAVE seen happen, it can fight back... If the snake feels threatened and decides not to eat it, the snake can get away in the wild... The snake can not get away in a cage... I didn't mean the rodent
I personally don't care about rodents... I don't like rodents and it doesn't bother me to gas them or whack them on the head or let them be constricted... I know that's mean, but I just don't like rats... I DO care about my snakes well being... I also care about the crap load of money I have put into my snakes... What if my $1100 paradox boa got bit by a rat? she could be killed or terribly scarred and there goes my $1100, well worth a TON more now, investment...
not worth it IMO... for the snake...

Re: Feeding Time
I see what your saying and i tried to feed him f/t i think 4-5 times. twice he attacked but never ate it. The other times he acted like he didn't acknowledge it. Not only did i spend $75 on the frozen rats but i had to buy a bowl to thaw them in and a nice pair of long tongs. i have $90 wrapped up in some frozen rats my snake refuses to eat.
Plus the lady friend hates seeing me thaw out dead rats.

Re: Feeding Time
lol, thaw them out overnight in the fridge... then simply warm them one cycle in hot water make sure they are nice and toasty warm and jiggle the heck out of it, lol... I'd say try it again... more nutritious for him too... give him about 2-3 weeks after this passed meal and try again I'm sure he'll be hungry by then

Re: Feeding Time
Sakara is right, it only takes one time of for the snake to strike slightly off so the prey can get a nice chunk of snake. Two of mine have two obvious scars that look like a rodent bite (happened before I got them). Also, what is your plan when your boa is WAY too big for mice? it shouldn't be hard to switch over, it just takes patience. And your lady friend can get over it, especially if it means that your snake will be healthier in the end.

reading>you. I only still feed him mice when the pet store is out of rats. I've feed my snake live chics and very small rabbits before. I bought the frozen rats so i wouldn't have to feed him live anymore. He just prefers live.

Re: Feeding Time
*sighs* I'm not trying to start a fight. I just saw you said you're feeding it mice because it didn't like f/t rats. It's great if it takes rabbits (especially if they're f/t ). But snakes CAN get seriously injured by a live rodent and mice ARE less nutritious.
I am kind of perplexed that your girl can watch you feed a cute little rabbit and not a rat. But this is as far as I care to discuss about it, really. No disrespect. Have a nice day.
