Striped Spider
in blue though.
His genetics should produce some great combos when he grows up.

Re: Striped Spider
What an interesting pattern. I'd like to see what comes out of his matings.

Re: Striped Spider
The snake is nice looking. However, knowingly propagating an animal with genetic neurological disorders is a disservice to the species and just plain wrong.

Re: Striped Spider
dont buy rotts or danes because they come with back/hip displacement problems. dont buy bulldogs, pugs or sharpaes because theyre proned to respiratory problems.
its all the same, theyre good snakes. healthy even, even if they cant tell which way is up sometimes. the disorder is not life threatening as the disorders in the dogs i just mentioned.

If you had the choice of producing these dogs with or without displacement problems, which would you produce?

Prone isn't the same a 100% genetic certainty.

Read your own statement a couple of times and allow it to sink in. There is no need, other than greed, to produce any "pet" animal that may have a condition which adversely affects its quality of life.

Re: Striped Spider
i dont agree with you. i dont think quality of life is compromised at all.
i have a spider, i agree he has a "defect" if i could even call it that, in which he sometimes spins. i don't think he is for better or for worse because of it, as with that aside he acts the same as my other bps. now
do i think that the first spider was reproduced knowing it had a "defect" was wrong? quite possibly.
are you proposing that the morph not be reproduced altogether so it died out? i dont think that would happen.... a lot of bp morphs carry the spider gene... i think the spider is the only one that spins... never heard of a bee spinning...
i get what youre saying, i just dont agree with it, i dont think the spiders live out a poor quality of life from this condition.

Re: Striped Spider
Wow, I learn something new everyday. I never knew that spider BP's have a genetic dissorder. We were close to getting a couple spiders for future breeding but now I'm kinda glad that we didn't.
Either way, to the OP, great looking critter!!!

Re: Striped Spider
beautiful spider steve.
I have a PERFECT male yearling spider that doesnt show signs of wobble what so ever. IF he does have it, it sooooooo sudtle that its undetectable.

Re: Striped Spider
I didn't know this either and have yet to see Tara's spider ball "spin" or wobble. But in doing some research I hear that they all do it to some degree. As long as he is eating normally, we will continue to prepare to breed with the pastel for the Bee's in a couple of years.

Hopefully, your spider will remain that way. If so, it would be one of the first spider ball pythons known to appear asymptomatic.

Re: Striped Spider
the parentals to my spider were asymptomatic. so were a lot of the siblings. its my understanding that heavy spinners can produce ones that dont spin or wobble at all and vice versa as is the case with my spider.
my spider is a pretty heavy spinner, i see him rollercoasting inside his tub sometimes. ive seen spiders that spend almost 100% of their time completely upside down. seems this disorder affects their equilibrium where they have a hard time realizing what way is up and what way is down.
this is just my understanding of it, anyway.
while handling my spider he seems just like any other bp, also when he eats, his def/uri record is top top, perfect sheds, the whole 9. he does this heavy spinning when he is by himself, i find it strange but interesting at the same time.

Re: Striped Spider
To my knowledge all spider balls produced to date show signs in varying degrees of a neurological disorder. Had a fairly involved conversation with Dave Barker (vpi.com) and several other breeders working with spiders regarding this aspect. It's been several months, perhaps something new has happened? From what I've read/heard the neurological symptoms can and often do change in intensity as the animal ages. Some get better with age, some get worse, and some don't seem to change.

Re: Striped Spider
another thing i find interesting is most morphs that are mixed with spiders (bumblebees, lesserbees, killerbees, pewterbees, etc.) dont show the same symptoms as plain jane spiders. at least not that ive heard of. if anyone has heard something about this i'd like to know.

Re: Striped Spider
actually the higher morphs DO show the same symptoms... I saw a bee that wobbled worse then my spider... I think it's just less common...
I know that my spider does wobble sometimes, especially when he's excited and wants food... BUT he seems very happy, he's always bright and shiny, calm and seems happy
