hi everyone: I am having a problem keeping humidity up in skulls tank...got the temp up with new under tank pads..90 on warm side 80 on cool....got a reptile humidifer from the pet store but it only hold a small amount of water so the humidity goes up to 65-70 percent but won't stay there...so.. i went and got a baby humidifier hold a gallon of water but only keeps humidity at about 50 - 55 percent ....is this ok? tank size is 36x24x36

I'm going to guess that Skull is a BP???

Any ways, it sounds like you are using a tank with a screeened lid, so I will give some tips for getting the humids up to 70-75% for them.

You can put the water bowl on the warm side.
Cover the screen top with a moist towel, making sure it won't become a fire hazard (too close to lights etc.)
Cover part of the screen top with plastic wrap or aluminum foil, which will raise the temps a little bit, but as long as you don't go over 95f, it will still be fine for a python.
Mist the tank several times a day, if possible.

It sounds like the reptile humidifier was doing fine, but too small of a water supply, any way to increase its' capacity?

If you do put a water dish on the hot side, be sure to provide a cold water dish on the cold side for drinking.

I'm replying on the the thing Jpaulson said about providing a water bowl on the cool and hot side. I did that in my tank and every time I saw the snake drinking he was drinking from the hot one. I'm sure every snake is different , but I was just letting him know that not all the time the snake will drink from the cool side. Plus the extra bowl will take up a little bit of floor space that the snake could use. Replying on the humidity it sounds fine to me the only thing I could suggest is that you mist the tank frequently when the snake is about to shed. Also putting the foil on the top does actually work quite well thats what I did it raised my humidity and the temps. Just my .02 hope everything work out for you.

Oh by the way you could by some peat moss and put it in the tank and mist that it holds moisture real well. So you won't have to mist as much.

Agreed, Stretch..each snake is different. Here is my point:

<TABLE BORDER=0 ALIGN=CENTER WIDTH=85%><TR><TD><font class="pn-sub">Quote:</font><HR></TD></TR><TR><TD><FONT class="pn-sub"><BLOCKQUOTE> ..got the temps up with new under tank pads..90 on warm side 80 on cool. </BLOCKQUOTE></FONT></TD></TR><TR><TD><HR></TD></TR></TABLE>

If he has got his ambient temperatures around 90 with the addition of the under tank heat pads, how hot is the surface temp where the water bowl will be? IMO, that is going to make the water quite warm. Sure, he may drink it, but it would be better to supply a cool side water dish based on those temps. What about thermoregulating and soaking? What will the snake do if he needs to soak (critical for shedding), but finds the water too warm for him?

I agree, placing the water bowl on the warm side will help with humidity. But, it would probably be a good idea to put a cool side water dish in for him to choose from.

Jpaulson you are very right I wasn't trying to step on your toes or anything like that. Those temps are quiet high and the water is probably to warm. I was just implying it might not be a must have thing because the tank he has isn't that big maybe he might want to not crowd that much. I apologize if you felt I was doubting your intelligence because I wasn't.
