I am adopting a 3.5ft Ball Python and was planning on
keeping him in a 40gallon breeder tank for the time being.
I know bigger would be better but does anyone think this
is too small of a cage?

I've heard of people keeping the in a 29 Gal for all their life. I don't agree with it, but it could be done. Not sure of the dimensions of a 40 breeder but it sounds pretty desent. Most BPs get between 4-5'. So up to you. Always bigger is better, but if too big remember to put in a few hide spots for it.

The easiest way to know if a cage is big enough is to measure it from the bottam right corner to the top left corner(or visa-versa). This should roughly be the same length as the snake. Some say when the length of the tank or cage is 2/3 the length of the snake, but that can be kind of small for adults.

The cage that I made for my adult male BP in is 3ftx2ftx2ft. The extra 6 inches helps out in the depth for water bowl and hides. He seems very happy with it. He was in a 40 gal breeder untill I made this one, I just could not keep the heat right in a glass cage.

Yeah I've read all those different specs for sizing cages but personally I always like there to be abundance of space and a (at least somewhat) natural habitat. I've seen other people with boaphiles and other seemingly confined quarters but I just feel Like my Annie housed in a 90gal amphibous tank. I plan on building something much bigger and better eventually, I was just a lil concerned about having her housed in the 40gal for possibly an extended period of time.
