At the end of last week, I got a call from a friend of mine that owns a local exotic pet shop. This call was no surprise seeing as they call me rather often with offers on this and that, or for help with something, etc...AnyHOW, they came across a 7 ft common female burm and seem to think enough of me to offer it to me first. The only problem is that it has 'a bit' of a resp infection, so naturally I began to see why a pet shop would offer me this snake for $100(canadian). I come to find out that she has already had baytril inj and is only having a bit of trouble clearing her resp system now. As nice as this is so far, it gets better. You see, I have an albino burm that is about the same size(6 or 7 inches bigger)that was thought to be female aswell(or so the papers stated when I got her, but the breeder never probed). "She" is now 16 months old, so nearing maturity, but has never 'bulked up' at all and therefore the thought that 'she' is a he has been rolling around in my head for several months now. Either way, the albino will be probed later this week and my fingers are crossed...literally-they're stuck that way . I'm picking up the new female, who happens to be a show snake, so a calm disposition has been guarenteed, in 2 or 3 days.

congrats....but please don't breed them...there are way more burms than there are good homes for them as it is. This is no better than breeding iguanas.

True Jules, but there are nearly no burm breeders in ontario, so there is a market at least.

Flood, don't take this the wrong way, but the market for burms will soon turn into an overflooding of rescue shelters. They lay a LOT of eggs in just one breeding and they are not a beginner snake. So, please, listen to Jules....and don't breed them. It isn't fair to the animal...

I'm not trying to bust your chops Flood...but just b/c something can be done does not mean it should be done. I really don't think that anyone needs to be breeding burms, for any reason. Jules and ldydrgn are giving you sound advice.

That's great that Ontario doesn't have many burms available. Wonderful actually....I wish it was like that here in the States. Let's say your python lays 50 eggs. Of the 50, lets say 40 hatch out healthy babies. Do you know 40 people in Ontario that can care for a snake that may grow up to be 20+ feet and over 300 lbs? Or are you like every one else and think they are cute when little and disposable at 6 feet? There are not enough good homes left in North America for a single clutch of burms for the long run. Sure there are some breeders out there with plenty of experience that can provide housing for some...but A) they are producing their own and B) they are just further adding to the problem as you will be if you breed any. Pet stores around Atlanta here have been selling baby burms by the truck loads to every kid that can manage to scrape up 99 bucks for as long as I can remember. Where are all these snakes now? I hardly know anyone keeping large burms. With as many as they are selling...there should be at least one in every household by now. But there isn't....Where are they? Disposed of....Dead....That's where they are. Don't be a part of this.

I agree with Julius, very well said, a lot of kids or people who dont want them after they get big or they just dont want to deal with them no more, or cant afford to feed them, give them away, throw them out or they starve..They go from person to person till no one cares and then they end up dieing some place.. Thats a real shame...

Like Juls has already said here in regards to breeding the burms ... Allthough you may think that there is a shortage of them in Canada atm.. If only a few people start breeding them, then your going to eventually wind up with a ton of unwanted HUGE, most cases unhealthy and neglected snakes ia all like we have going on here in the states as far as the burm is concerned is all. Why even contemplate adding to such a thing when there are MANY other species of snakes that you could breed and not be the "bottom rung" in such a thing possibly in your country ?
<TABLE BORDER=0 ALIGN=CENTER WIDTH=85%><TR><TD><font class="pn-sub">Quote:</font><HR></TD></TR><TR><TD><FONT class="pn-sub"><BLOCKQUOTE>They go from person to person till no one cares and then they end up dieing some place.. </BLOCKQUOTE></FONT></TD></TR><TR><TD><HR></TD></TR></TABLE>
Tons of shelters even euthanize them, among other specific ss also, just cuz they are a BURM and a HUGE snake etc in our country Those of us doing rescue, usually see at least 1 per month personally come through in rescue to us AND that's not even a minute % of the problem that exists here in this country at all. There's prolly about 25 at least out there that get "tossed/die off etc" for every 1 that we do get in even. UGH
Oh and also.. if the pet store needs your help with the burm...They really shouldn't be asking you to pay for it at all IMO. You'd be doing them a favor actually, not to mention some added expenses for the snake healthwise in further treating it for that RI also.

25 to 1? That's a pretty conservative figure....I bet it is more like several thousand to one. Go hang out on Bob Clark's site awhile and check out how many people there are breeding burms like mad. That is just one site. Most people breeding them haven't even found their way to the internet yet or at least to these forums...Most of my rescues are from people that don't go to herp forums at all. If they did, they would have a better grasp of the size of the problem and hopefully would stop breeding them.
